Ontario - Advice please - Completed
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 00:52 GMT (UK) »
I want to find an Ontario birth, 1912.
Specifically, I'm trying to find the name of the parents.

I've been reading the Archives Ontario stuff and now I'm completely confused.
On the one hand it infers births, including 1912, are available to the public, on microfilm, via Interloan.
On the other hand, the Privacy Laws say you can't see them until they are 100 years old.

Anyone got any ideas how I can crack this one?

I don't think there is anything "to crack".  1912 birth records are available through interlibrary loan from the Ontario Archives.

Thanks Debbie.

I just wasn't sure. I guess my next move is to find a nearby library with a microfilm reader.

Would you know if these film images carry the full birth details ....
mother's maiden name, father's name and occupation?

It is a 2 step process.  You order the appropriate index reel and find the registration number and year of the birth you are interested in and then you look up the registration number and order the reel that contains that number to view the actual birth registration image.

As long as all fields are filled out you should get the date of birth, the name of the child, father's name and occupation, mother's name and maiden name, informant's name and residence, who assisted at the birth, registrar's signature and place of registration.

Hi Debbie,

I've read that and had a look at the index which is online. It says that births A to Z for 1912 are on MS931 Reel 25 GSU 2434979.

So I'm assuming I can order that reel to see the full registration.

Do you think this assumption is correct?

Hi Genie,

It's been a long while since I have used the Ontario microfilms, but it sounds correct to me. As Debbie said, the ordering from the Province films is a two step process. You must order the film with the birth registration numbers on it  for the dates you are looking for first. The listing on that film are by name chronologically along with assigned reg number. So you have to make sure the film number you have is the one that shows the reg numbers. Once you have the reg # you want, you can then order the film by the birth reg number and that film will have all the birth details on it. Not sure why the Province does it that way, but we have to perservere with it :-)

Hope this helps clarify,

You have the correct film number quoted.  That film is the index not the online page.  From that first film you will find the birth linked to a registration number.  That registration number and registration year are important as it is the key to finding the appropriate film to order next to see the actual birth record.
