Thanks for the information in the Sherwood name Michael.   

Maybe Susannah moved to Newcastle from somewhere else, gave birth to Jane, then either married or remarried.

I've even checked the IGI records.  There's only one baptism for a Susannah Sherwood listed, but she'd have been well into her 40s when Jane was born, so I think it might be safe to rule her out, though you never know

There are quite a few burials of Sherwood's in Newcastle St. Nicholas 1813- 1839 but no baptisms or marriages under the same name.

It is a bit of a mystery.  I've found a marriage for a Thomas Sherwood in 1817, but he married someone called Barbara.  I've looked at the All Saints burials, but there's no sign of any male Sherwood burials in the two years prior to Jane's birth.  Of course, there's nothing to say her father had to be living in that parish.  It's all a bit confusing!
