Please help me find Susanna SHERWOOD

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me.  I'm trying to find information on Susanna SHERWOOD?

The only information I have on her is that she had a daughter, Jane, who was baptised in All Saints, Newcastle on 20 October 1819.  There is no father shown, and Susanna is listed as a widow, which I suspect is a polite way of saying unmarried :-).  At the time, Susanna was living in Ouseburn, Newcastle.

I've tried searching for a baptism record for her with no luck and she doesn't seem to appear on the 1841 census, though by that time she could have married or died.  I can't even be sure she was born in the Newcastle area.

 What clues lead you to supect that Susanna was unmarried rather than
 " widow" as recorded by the vicar of All Saints ?  Michael

Dem, i can see a marriage for a Jane Sherwood, All  Saints 1838 to Alex Robson, is this your Jane? If so have you the marriage cert?  She may well have cited Susannas husband as her father rather than none.

Hi Pete, and thanks.

Yes, that's my Jane Sherwood.  She was my g-g-grandmother.  I have Alexander & Jane's marriage cert, but she hasn't given any father's name, which again points to her being illegitimate. 

Census returns say she was born in Newcastle, and I know she was baptised there, but I can't find any trace of her mother, Susannah in Newcastle (apart from on Jane's baptism record).  I've looked through most of the Newcastle parishes at the Nortumberland Reords office with no luck.  Any other suggestions gratefully received!

I'm guessing she was illegitimate because of a lack of father on both her baptism and marriage certificates.  I know it's not 100% certain because if he'd died or left her mother before she was born she might not have known his name, but as I said it is just a guess.

Susanna could still have been a widow, even if the child was not that of her late husband. So Jane being illegitimate and not knowing a fathers name does not preclude Sarah having been married ...

Thanks, and good point  .  I hadn't thought about Susannah being married when Jane was born, but not to Jane's father. 

I'll see if I can find any trace of Susannah marrying a Mr Sherwood

 Just some snippets of info on the surname of Sherwood.

 The Surname Profiler web site has the name prevalent in the county of Yorkshire, but not figuring in Northumberland ( This is as measured in 1881)

For a little earlier snapshot..

In the 1841 census, there were 2003 Sherwood folk in England.
486 in Yorkshire
33 in Co Durham
One in Northumberland ( but not born in the county)

This one is a 20 yr old Jane Sherwood in Newcastle (page 848/11 29-2).
