If you were going to pick a program to do a family tree, what program would you suggest?

I've used RootsMagic and find it very user friendly.

If you are just starting it out the best bet might be to download a variety of the free trials to find out which one you find most comfortable.

You may find this useful, JoeM

I decided on Legacy 7 Deluxe. It seems easy to use.

I've tried Master Genealogist, AGES, Legacy Family Tree, GRAMPS and probably some others to.

They all have their pros and cons and some have features that others don't. For example AGES is a more basic package than others, but it has some very good report features that the others don't.

Legacy Family Tree is one of the most featured packed packages and has a lot of reporting features. However, it's very Windows 3.1; if you don't like battered old interfaces.

I didn't think much of Master.

My favourite is by far GRAMP. It has a lot of features and lets you store lots of key info in an organised manner. I also find it one of the easiest to navigate when at work. It's also the only choice (as far as I knw), if like me, you are a Linux user. I'd imagine it also works on Mac.

Give Family Historian a try (free trial software available.

It is incredibly powerful but you need to be very computer savy to get the best out of it.

What I particularly like is that you can build your tree graphically on the screen just by dragging.

Rog, That feature of building the tree graphically on screen by dragging sounds very good.

FTM is far more rigid than that :(

Thank you all for the heads up on the programs that are available.

I was using an Excell spread sheet but had a problem when trying to put in notes for a person.

If I wanted to add information on a person, I had to retype the entire bio.

This was getting pretty tedious.
