Marriage in Lancashire - Sarah Ann COOKSON
« on: Tuesday 19 January 10 23:38 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage of Sarah Ann Cookson and Samuel Johnson around 1861 - 1865 in or around Pendleton, Manchester.

Sarah ann b. 30.10.1842 Kirkham     Samuel b. 1840 Pendleton.(father Abraham mother Sarah

In 1861 she is single living in Brindle Heath Road, Pendleton (nr Salford I think) In 1862 she has a child Mary by 1863 she is in prison having given birth to Matilda whilst in there.

I don't seem to be able to come up with a match in marriage search.  Mary and Matilda both have the Johnson name.

Any advice where to look greatly appreciated.

Also where can I look for births/marriages prior to 1837?  What if I don't know where born/married?

On the childrens birth certs - does it show Samuel Johnson as their father?  If so - does it show Sarah as Sarah Johnson nee Cookson or just as Sarah Cookson

The 1863 marriage above was at St Mary's in Eccles.  The registers for the marriage are at Salford.  If you apply for a copy of the cert with a condition that Samuel's father must be Abraham - the registry office will not charge if it's the wrong entry

Go to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk and turn up the marriage entry

Click on the reference number in the right hand corner

Do the same on the next screen

You can then print off the application form

Hi

Thanks for the info.  Samuel Johnson 1863 marriage to Sarah J Thompson at Eccles. Doesn't sound like the right one but it looks like I'll have to risk ordering a copy.  Sarah Ann Johnson was named as mother on Matilda's birth cert and Samuel Johnson as father.  I haven't got her sisters cert.  I have searched Lancashire BMD and Latter Day Saints but still can't find it.  I have got Sarah Ann Cookson birth cert so she definitely is Cookson but did she get married before Samuel?   Looks like a brick wall until I order the above marriage cert and check father's name.

Hi

My mum is researching our family history and I think we are related!!! I am looking at Matildas birth certificate as we speak, and we are also trying to find what Sarah did.  You are right about Samuel as mum has found him.  Sarah Ann Johnson is my mums great great grandma i'm confused!

Did you ever find out what Sarah was sent to Salford Prison for?  Mum is going to National Records at weekend, I can let you know if she unearths anything interesting?
