Passenger record for Quebec 1921
« on: Friday 22 January 10 13:08 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to establish if the below records are those of my relative and hope there may be fuller details in Canada.
His name was John Thomas Matthews, born Ireland 1898.
Details for a John Thos Matthews
Date of Departure: April 1921
Port of Departure: Liverpool
Ship: Minnedosa (Canadian Pacific )
Marital Status: Single
The records do not say where he was born, or where his last residence was.
Would the Canadian records show where he was going to.
All help would be much appreciated.

There is a passenger list for this entry - you can search for the original image at this site using the ships name and details.  This lists the cousin's name he was going to in Guelph as R. Jostain
There is also a Form 30A which adds more detail - these are handwritten forms and sometimes they are more difficult to decipher is the handwriting is not neat.
John thomas Matthews, single, 23, b. Gashall Kings Co, Irish, Religon - Church of Ireland, Farmer, going to Canada to work, never lived in Canada before, can read and write English, going to Cousin Richard Jo___, 19 Piper(?) St. Guelph, Ontario  See Image

Thank you, this is the right person.
Born in Geashill, Kings County (Co.Offaly)
His cousin was Richard Justin of Guelph.

Last bit of cheek
Could you see if you can find Richard Justin, in the 1910 Canadian census, as this would also give the name of his parents, who also came from Ireland.

This is the site for the ships lists which I apparently forgot to include in my last reply.

You can search for free the 1901 and 1911 census at this site

Thank you for your help. I just need to find Richard Justin to solve another family mystery.
I have been looking for years to find the Matthews family leaving Canada for Ireland between late 1886 and the end of 1888. Charles Matthews born Ireland 1861 and his wife Susanne born Ireland 1855, Richard Henry Matthews, son, born, Ireland 1881, Robert Samuel Matthews, son, born Ireland 1882 and Charles Justin Matthews, son, born Toronto, Canada 14.05.1886. Their next child was born back in Ireland in 1889.

There is a marriage for Richard Justin, 29, resident of Guelph, bachelor, b. Queen's County Ireland, s/o George Thomas Justin (farmer) and Jane Handley to
Ida Ollie Buck, 25, spinster, resident and born in Guelph, d/o Thomas Mallore buck and Sarah Jane Early.
Marriage took place 3 Sept 1912 either at the residence of Thos. H. Bates 108 Woolwich St. Guelph, Wellington County or in Toronto, County of York.  2 sections of the marriage registration seem to contradict each other.

Is this your Richard?

This sounds very likely, as the Justins came from Kings  and Queens counties in Eire. It is a very unusual surname.
I know that John Thomas Matthews worked in a grain Mill in Guelph whilst waiting for his bride to arrive from England.
They married in Canada and then moved to the States.
Really appreciate your help.

There is a record for Richard Justin, 26, single, farm labourer, Irish, B. Portarlington(?), father Thomas Justin of Portarlington.  He sailed from Queenstown, Ireland to New York, arriving 29 Jan 1912 with a final destination of Guelph, Ontario.

I didn't find the family on the 1911 census

Portarlington, Co offaly, is close to Geashill, Co Offaly, where the Matthews family farmed.
Charles (Chas) Matthews, father of John Thomas, married Suanne Justin in 1880, at Lea Church, Portarlington.
Would it say the relative that he, Richard Justin, was going to, after leaving Ellis Island. Richard should also show up in the Irish census of 1911 and 1901.
Thank you.
