Blackhall,Blackell, Blackall, Blackbell,Blackhill & any other variations
« on: Saturday 23 January 10 11:22 GMT (UK) »
Sorry for the long Subject

Basically I am trying to find anyone in Berwick who has any of these names in their tree

My main interest is the Blackhalls but it would appear that some of these varaints may have been used, particularly in Berwick

I have a John BLACKHALL who died in 1881 (b abt 1797)at Blackpots, Coldingham. I found him initiall through an index search on Scotlands People. However the extract shows his name as being John BLACKBALL so there could be a misreading of the name, b & h look fairly similar dependent on the handwriting. His parents are given as Walter Blackball & Christina Kerr and I can find no trace of them anywhere. John is married to Margaret Cleghorn and I have traced a son Walter b abt 1837, m 1863 to Agnes Paterson, on the IGI his name is given as Walter BLACKELL, Walter and Agnes have two daughters Agnes and Margaret both given the name BLACKELL

I'm hoping someone has some of these names in their tree as I would like to make a decision as to whether or not the original name might be Blackhall

If this thread is still alive, my tree includes some of the people mentioned in the first post:

Walter Blackball or Blackbell or Blackbull (depends how you read the handwriting) married Christian Kerr, who was baptised 23 March 1785 at Cockburnspath, daughter of David Kerr and Ann Grieve.

Walter Blackb?ll and Christian Kerr had a daughter, Agnes Blackb?ll, baptised 30 June 1805 at Longformacus, and she married James Laurie, 31 December 1857 at Whitsome.  They had a daughter, Christian or Christina Laurie, born 9 July 1827 at Chirnside.

It would be nice to finally give these people a surname instead of a ? mark.  How is the surname usually written today: Blackball, Blackbell, Blackbull, Blackhall?
Clezie (Clazie, Clezy, Clazy, Clazey, Claise, etc.), Lockhart, Heiser, Schwab, Tomon, Zarnowski, Megert, Iseli

There are Blackhalls living in Spittal (Berwick) today. Are you related to them?

Any relationship to me is extremely distant.  A second cousin of someone in my tree married a man named Walter Blackbell in 1857.  At least that is what his name looks like in the old records.  The handwriting is so bad!  It could actually be Blackball or Blackbell or Blackbull or Blackhall or Blackhull, etc.  I am still trying to figure out, what was his surname?

I am probably not directly related to them but I am interested in any and all Blackhall info. I have quite a lot of data on the Blackhalls from the Border areas and if you have any contacts with these Blackhalls could you please direct them to the website.
From what I can tell the Blackhalls from that area appeared to hop backwards and forwards between Scotland and England.
My main interest is still the Blackhalls of NE Scotland but I have hit numerous brick walls there due to the parish clerks in most areas not including the mothers name on the OPRs and since most of the males at that time seem to be William, James & George it doesn't give many clues
