« on: Sunday 24 January 10 14:54 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if somebody could help me find any details re William Willis b 1793 in Stebbing  Essex. I believe his wifes name was Elizabeth- surname unknown- babout 1793 in Felstead. I've tried searching Parish records & census but nothing! I got this little bit of info from a family member who contacted me but i'd love to confirm it for myself
Many thanks
Brenda :)

The baptisms for Stebbing and Felstead are on Essex SEAX, but the system seems to be down at the moment. However there is a William Willis married to an Elizabeth living in Essex on the 1841 census. Children Peter 1821/Amelia 1824/Susan 1827 and Rebecca 1832-don't know if this is the family you are looking for.
regards.

Hi Supergran,

I have a William Willis baptised 3 Mar 1793 at Stebbing, he is the son of Joseph Willis and Sarah Thurgood, William is a younger brother of Sarah Willis who married my gt X 3 grandfather William Tibbles/Tibbel/Theobald, this info is from my own research.

Sorry but I can't help you with his marriage, I haven't searched for it to date.

What info do you have for this Willis line prior to his 1793 baptism?  I may be able to help you.

By the way if you ever receive any info stating that William's mother Sarah Thurgood,born/baptised 1762 at Stebbing, was married to a Joseph Wills (only one i) who was born in Ilsington, Devon, ignore it, it's unsubstantiated rubbish.  There are two or three people on GenesReunited who have that info in their trees and as I understand it the info has been gleaned from the IGI and Ancestry, not verified and no doubt copied by others.

Hi Paco
Thanks for taking the trouble to look this up for me. Unfortunately, I don't think this is my Willliam- wrong children ! but it could be an "off-shoot" so I will keep the ref- just in case

Hi Findem
Thats my William!  He's my gt x3 Grandfather & I have mother Sarah Thurgood b Stebbing 1762 so I seem to be on the right track.I've seen the Devon ref & it doesn't tie up at all does it . Its Williams wife thats eluding me at the mo & his marriage
I have his parents & siblings but that is as far as I have got at present.
Maybe I could contact you once I have claryfied that family ?
 Really appreciate your help

Hi Supergran,

By all means contact me when you are ready, I'll be happy to help you, I go three generations further back than Joseph and Sarah Willis.

Have you thought about asking on the Essex Lookup Requests for some kind person to have a look in Boyd's Marriage index for William Willis marriages, you never know your luck it, could be in Boyds.

Another thought, have you, forget that thought, I was going to suggest an 1851 census check to see where William's wife was born, could have provided a clue, then I remembered the 1851 for Stebbing and some other Essex places doesn't exist, der!  ::)

If you haven't already done so a check of the 1861 census might find him and his wife still alive and kicking, William would be around 68 so there is a chance.

By the way regarding the Joseph Wills of Devon, one person had him married to a lady in Devon with all children born there, plus Sarah Thurgood, plus another Thurgood lady, all their children born in Essex.  The children's births/baptism overlapped so all I can say is that if he could have achieved that, he was a better man than I, the travelling alone would have killed him  ;D

Regards
