Mellick Co Clare
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 10:21 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me if Mellick Co Clare has had a name change. I have googled it and have not been able to find it on any maps. I would be most interested to know what part of Clare its in eg nearest big town.

I have tried different spellings but still no luck.

Thank you

Lyn

I visited that lovely part of the world in 1994.  It was quite sparsely populated but building development was just starting.  While there I bought this book  "The History and Folklore of Parteen & Meelick".  There are a lot of names mentioned.  I can do lookups for you but as there is no index it could take awhile as it is easy to get sidetracked when reading this book!!

thank you for your reply, I have some relations that came from there, although for years we have been under the impression it was called Mellick, and not Meelick.

The families are: Patrick Moloney c 1798 and his wife Catherine Walsh  1801

They had 8 chn all born in Meelick and were married 1 May 1815

Hi,

Sorry It has taken me a while to get back to you but I have had visitors.  However could you give me the children's names? There is frequent referrence to a Martin Maloney.

I can tell you that according to the book, Meelick (meaning low marshy land)  was on the banks of the Shannon River and was subject to high tides.  Parts of Meelick were also  seen as a part of the parish of Parteen.  Also just to confuse the research both Meelick and Parteen were referred to by other names:  Meelick as Killeely (and spelling variations) and Parteen as Kilquane.

The Population of Kilquane (Parteen):

1831 was 2028
1841 was 2081 with 314 houses.

That's all for now.  Gazania
