Looking for KEIRVEN info
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 23:14 GMT (UK) »
I have traced my maternal grandmother to her birth in Northumberland and I'm now looking for additional information. I have her parents and grandparents identified. Here's a summary;

Patrick KEIRVEN (b. about 1836 Ireland) and Margaret "unknown" (b. about 1846 Ireland):
- marriage unknown, possibly Ireland
- four children: Johanna (b. 1871), James (b. 1878), Joseph (b. 1882), and Martin Patrick (b. 1883)
- 1871 census shows Patrick, Margaret and Johania KERVIN (different spelling) in Walker (can't read the address but it might be 69 Victoria St)
- 1881 census shows Patrick, Margaret, Johanna & James at 8 Fisher St, Walker
- 1891 census... can't find any reference
- 1901 census shows Margaret (Widower), James, Joseph and Martin at 74 Church St, Walker

James KEIRVEN and Isabella SNOWDON (b. 1880, Willington Northumberland):
- Married late 1904 in the district of Tynemouth (town/parish unknown)
- three children: Johanna (b. 1905), Elizabeth (b. 1907), and George (b. 1910)
- 1907 birth cert for Elizabeth shows their address (home birth) of 148 Laurel St, Wallsend
- 1911 census shows James, Isabella, Johanna, Elizabeth & George at 12 Orde Avenue, Willington

Elizabeth KEIRVEN and Ralph Valentine EDWARDS (b. 1906, Hobart Tasmania)
- Married Jan 1932 in Richmond, Melbourne, Australia

I have four big gaps I'm trying to fill.
#1 - I can't trace Patrick and Margaret KEIRVEN's (or KERVIN's) arrival into Walker from Ireland. I can see no record in Ireland that corresponds (there are no Keirven's but so many variations of similar sounding names). I'm guessing that they were married in Ireland so that would mean they traveled sometime between 1864 (Margaret at age 18) and 1871 (birth of first child).
#2 - There are no Keirven's listed on the 1891 census. I can't even see any Kervin's that match names and approx birth year. All I can assume is that the entire family was out of the UK at that time.
#3 - Tied to this is that Patrick Keirvin died sometime between the 1881 and 1901 census' (between age 35 and 45). I can't see a record of his death in the BDM records (via FreeBDM)
#4 - I can't find any record of Elizabeth leaving Northumberland and coming to Australia (either from the UK side or the Australian side). It would have been between 1907 (birth) and 1932 (marriage). There is a record of a James Keirven sailing in Jan 1927 on the ship Berrima, but there is no record of an Elizabeth traveling with him.

So any help filling the above gaps would be appreciated. I'm collecting relevant certificates from the UK GRO, but it's a slow and expensive process.

Death on FreeBMD, Mar 1887, Tynemouth, Patrick Kervin, age 49.

I think you will need to get one of Patrick/Margarets childrens birth certs to get Margarets maiden name, to help you get further back.

Probable marriage on FreeBMD :
Jun 1866 Tynemouth, Patrick Kirven. One of the two potential brides is a Margaret Toban. I notice in 1901 census that there is a cousin William Tobin living with Margaret.

Thanks Alan. The 1891 Census info does line up. I went back to the index (via ancestry.com) and still couldn't find it. So I searched through the pages and found the names transcribed as Keissen. I'm guessing there are multiple indexes that folks search.
