Warrington local paper archive
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 13:00 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather, Joseph Armitage, died on 28 October 1913 at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Warrington.  I've been told that it was from eating dodgy mussels but the death cert says, simply, typhoid fever haemorrhage.

Does anyone know how far back the local paper's archives go?  I wondered if his death was reported or whether he had an obituary.

Thanks for any help

Hi,

I would either visit or email Warrington Library as I think that would be the best place for old newspapers.

If you don't live near Warrington, the library may well be able to check the newspaper for you, especially as you have an exact date, and if they find anything will send you a photocopy.  They are usually very helpful and I don't think they will charge much.  Burnley Library did a similar thing for me and it was only a couple of pounds to cover the photocopy and postage.

Does the death certificate say there was an inquest?

Thank you.  The death cert does not mention an inquest but I will have a bash at contacting the library - you never know, I might be lucky.
