GRIFFITHS help 1901 census
« on: Thursday 17 March 05 03:32 GMT (UK) »
I recently married into a Griffiths family, and I'm trying to help them do some family history work for a family reunion this summer.

I have a Daniel Williams Griffiths b. 13 Jul 1893 in Newtown, Montgomery, Wales.  However, I can't find his parents.

He immigrated to New Ulm, MN in about 1925.

Anything anyone can find on Daniel Williams Griffiths or his parents will help greatly.

Thank you.

Is Daniel's date of birth definitely correct?  Where did you get the date from?

Try looking his birth up on here http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl   Free BMD is an ongoing project to transcribe the Civil Registration Index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales.  It is free to search, but please note that not all years have been completed.  Full details are available on the site.

You could also try 1837online http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/  which is the same as Free BMD but the index is complete.  The search is free, but you will have to pay to see the results.  Again, full details of the pay-pre-view is available on the site.

If you can find him on either of these sites you will be able to then order the birth certificate from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Hope this helps.

Thank you Jan.  I will check out those websites.

Daniel's birthdate was given to me by his living children.  I assume that it is nearly correct.  His birth year was at least confirmed on a death certificate from MN.

This is my first venture into Welsh genealogy, and I'm just trying to feel my way around.

Hi

I have had a look at the 1901 census index  http://www.census.pro.gov.uk and there is a Daniel GRIFFITHS age 7 in Newtown Montgomeryshire - birthplace given as Coventry (Shropshire).  Could this be him?  Perhaps the person who registered the death (even perhaps Daniel himself) believed that he had been born in Newtown if he had lived there from a very young age.  Incidentally, Coventry isn't in Shropshire so there is a mistake somewhere  ???  Should it read Oswestry Shropshire  ???

There is also a Daniel Williams GRIFFITHS birth registered Sep quarter (meaning born May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep) 1893 Oswestry registration district, Shropshire ref. 6a 689

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

You can order a certficiate from the online GRO site for £7 if you think this is him.

Best wishes

It looks like this Daniel is the one I'm looking for.  Yippee!  Thank you. Thank you.

I apologize for my ignorance in advance.  What is the GRO site?  I think I would like to order a birth certificate.

For the GRO site - see the link in Jan's message above:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Before you order, you might like to just check the ref. to make sure that I haven't made a typo:
