Where else can I look?
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 19:38 GMT (UK) »
My Gandfather (born 1923) said that his one Uncle died in WW1. He knew nothing more than that his mum was very upset that her younger brother had been killed.
We have tried to find service records for him, we can only find one record with the right name, place of birth and age but this soldier married and was discharged after the war. We then decided to check the War Graves Comission (as we realise many of the service records have not survived) but none of the men with the right name was the right person (from place of birth/residence and checking service numbers against service records).
Does the War Graves Comission site show all of the men who died in the First World War or is there somewhere else we can look? He was definitely in the forces as we have postcards he sent back from France.
Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

If you provide what details you have, I'm sure someone will try to help, Roz.

CWGC shows all casualties.
However only a fraction of service records survive as you say, so stick with the casualty records.
Many CWGC records don't give any addresses/next-of-kin etc, so these you can't dismiss.
There's also SDGW (Soldiers Died in the Great War) which someone may be able to check for you.

What do you know?
Can you give us a name to work with?
What clues on these postcards? Can we say which service or which unit from them?
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Sorry, that would help wouldn't it - new to this - I only joined rootschat this evening.
His name was Harry Parkinson and he was born 1893/94 in Dudley Worcestershire. His parents were George Parkinson (Flint Glass Maker born Edinburgh) and his mother Emily Parkinson (nee Jones). He had four brothers: Edward, George, William and John(Jack) and five sisters: Rose, Lilly, Elizabeth, Annie and Matilda.
Thanks.

Dont' know what regiment he served in, sorry. The postcards are of no use information wise, just birthday greetings to his sister and nephew. Embriodered on the front.

I've tried CWGC, using Geoff's Search Engine with just Parkinson and Dudley, but get nothing.

SDGW is also coming up blank.

The other possibility is that he died after being discharged, from either wounds, sickness, or non-service related (accident) and is missing from CWGC, or in the latter case, would not qualify.
There is nothing blatantly obvious on the GRO Death Index, but a couple of possibles.

Phil
Sussex: Satcher (Hamsey) and Gatton (East Grinstead)
Leicestershire: Pratt
South Wales: Evans (Neath)
Poland: Gonet, Deren

Forest Row: War Memorial and Camp WW1
Lewisham War Memorials & WW1 Graves

Thanks for looking at those for me.

I too looked at the GRO records but the only one that is the right name, age and area(ish as I know lots of the family moved into Aston/Birmingham) died in 1930, which means my Grandfather would have met him and he was (unfortunately he passed away last year) certain that his Uncle Harry died before he was born. The 'died in the war' bit was what he was always told by his mother.

Thank you again.

Roz.
