birth St Helier Richards 1836 COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Friday 29 January 10 14:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Would anyone be able to look up a birth for me for JAMES B RICHARDS

The 1851 census for Devon shows he was born in St Helier 1836.His parents were

James and Eliza Richards. They moved to Jersey from Wales  for a short while  so I

would be interested to know if a father's occupation was on the parish record.

Many thanks for any help

It's a shame none of his younger siblings were born in Jersey - baptisms in St Helier after 1842 are on-line and in most cases show the father's occupation.
From what I remember, and the Archive isn't open again until Tues, occupations are rarely shown in the baptism registers.
Have you considered the possibility that he was in the Army? - there were a lot of soldiers posted here for short periods during that time.

Hi
Thanks for replying so quickly,I don't think James was in the army.He was a

shopkeeper in Newport Wales in 1841,  a musician  in Exeter Devon in 1851, and a

broker/carpenter in Devon  in 1861.Obviously he was prepared  to do anything to

earn a living

I'll have a look in the parish records next time I'm at the Archive but of course there's no guarantee that James was baptised.

I found the baptism record but unfortunately there is no record of the father's occupation. As you say, probably not a soldier as that usually is recorded in the registers.

St Helier 25/10/1835 James Bell Richards son of James and Eliza. The parents stood as godparents.

The unusual middle name may be a clue to a family name.

Thanks for taking the time to search for me.If I remember rightly the witnesses to

James and Eliza's wedding were called Bell.
