Researching my Grandfathers war - Royal Engineers
« on: Friday 29 January 10 22:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

This is my first post so I apologise for the length, I have a lot of questions!

I have been researching my Grandfathers military service during WWII and discovered he served in 994 Dock Operating Company and later 1010 DOC during the Africa Campaign.

He is listed as being a part of 1 Stevedore Battalion (994 DOC) serving "overseas" for the dates 15/03/1940 - 18/06/1940 does this mean he took part in Dunkirk? Or perhaps he was in another Port?

After being transferred to 1010 he went to N.Africa and then possibly to Italy but i am unsure as no places are mentioned on his service record.

My Grandfather told me stories of him being on at least 2 ships (that I can remember) which were sunk but there is no mention of these on his record. Any one why this would be? or what ships they where?

Any information which can help me to understand where he served will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Try contacting the Royal Engineers museum.  The archivist might be able to help you.  You could also try the Royal Engineers Assn (old comrades) as they have some vets who can help you or point you in the right direction.
