Struggling with Smiths in Deptford...Help Please!
« on: Sunday 31 January 10 17:51 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone on here can help me with these Smiths?

I'm looking at them for a friend. So far...I've found Frank Smith on the 1911 Census, (aged 5yrs & so DOB Approx 1906) with his father Peter Smith, (aged 40 in 1911, & so DOB Approx 1871). Peter Smith is a Stevedore & the family are living at 29 Watergate Street, Deptford North, in the Parish of St Pauls:
SMITH, PETER    HEAD    MARRIED           40yrs    STEVEDORE    born DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, KATE    WIFE    MARRIED    19yrs     28yrs    born   DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, ELLEN    DAUGHTER    SINGLE        17yrs    FACTORY HAND  born DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, EDWARD    SON    SINGLE           15yrs    FACTORY HAND  born DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, WILLIAM    SON                      11yrs     born   DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, FRANK    SON                               5 yrs   born   DEPTFORD KENT
SMITH, MARGARET    DAUGHTER           3yrs    born   DEPTFORD KENT
TOBIN, MARY ANN    MOTHER IN LAW    WIDOW 68yrs    NO OCCUPATION born   OXFORDSHIRE
TOBIN, JOHN    NEPHEW               23yrs    FACTORY HAND born   DEPTFORD KENT
TOBIN, MARY    NIECE               20yrs    FACTORY HAND  born   DEPTFORD KENT
TOBIN, MARIAN    NEPHEW          19yrs    FACTORY HAND  born   DEPTFORD KENT

Having found them on the 1911, - I thought that it would be relatively straightforward to find Peter Smith (Born Deptford 1871) on the 1901 Census...& then hopefully on the earlier Censuses too. However, I seem to have been going round in circles of Smiths for days on Ancestry:-( Its a nightmare!!

I should be so grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction with these Smiths!!

Incidentally...there must be some mistake with Kate Smiths age on the 1911 ;D ;D Peter Smith says that he's been married for 19yrs...but Kate is only 28yrs, - (& so would have had to be an extremely young bride :o :o). I'm guessing that Kate must be a second wife?

Cheers, Romilly :)

Many Thanks for finding those Jennifer, - he certainly liked to keep it in the family!!!

I'm still puzzled as to why I can't find them on the 1901... ???

Thanks for finding them Pauline J.

I'm sure that Ancestry used to have the facility that you could search by reference nos...but it seems to have disappeared since they re-jigged that Site. However, I have now found them!

Still can't find Peter and Margaret Smith on the 1901 though...

They must have had Ellen & Edward by then...& possibly William. Is it just my searching technique, - or are they missing from the 1901?

Romilly.

Romilley, when you log on to Ancestry then click on Search, you'll find, on the top right hand side "Old Search".  Click on to that and you'll get up the original search page, complete with spaces to search on reference nos.

Thanks for that Lizzie, - I thought it was just me!

I still can't find these elusive Smiths on the 1901, although I have now found the Tobins on the 1881.
