COMPLETED!! Baptism lookup please - Mary Ann Howkins
« on: Wednesday 03 February 10 00:42 GMT (UK) »
I need some help finding the baptism of Mary Ann Howkins, born about 1823 or 24 in Oxford. Possibly St Peter le Bailey or St Thomas. Her father was William Howkins, a boatman. She had a brother William, born about 1831.

She married Charles Curtis in 1842 and was living at Castle Street in St Thomas, Oxford at the time, but I can't find her anywhere on the 1841 census.

thanks for the help!!

-Claire   :)

Thanks for looking Alan. I don't think that's her though, it's the wrong year.  My Mary Ann was of the Fisher Row Howkins family. I really do think she was baptized right in Oxford, at either St Peter le Bailey or St Thomas.

I appreciate the help  :)

thanks Carolyn!

Do you by any chance see another William born in 1831? Mary Ann's brother appears on the census from 1851 to 1881 and always put his birth at 1831.

I really appreciate the help "-)

Hi Claire
Can't see another William Howkins baptised around 1831 in the St Thomas Registers.

Looked for a death for William born 1821 but the only William Howkins I could find was William aged 31 of High Bridge buried 19 June 1926.

Is it possible Caroline remarried or the family moved away?

Hi Carolyn,

thanks for checking. It's helpful to see William the father's burial. I will order the marriage certificate for the son William born 1831 to see if I can figure it out that way. I think he was married in the 1840s.

I really appreciate your time, researching from the USA can be a little difficult. Everyone on this forum is so kind, I'm really grateful for the help.

The Oxford census returns 1851 -81 show 2 William Howkins born in Oxford - one born c1831 and married to Eliza and one born c 1822 and married to Susan - which one is yours?

and that is my problem ???

The reason why I'm interested in William is because I'm trying to find his sister Mary Ann Howkins. I know she delivered her first child on Fisher Row, and she also went to live there when she was ill in the 1860s. Both Williams were at Fisher Row. I can't find Mary Ann Howkins on the 1841 census anywhere. I'd feel better if I could find her and prove who her parents were, and if in fact she is the Mary Ann who was born in 1823, who you found in the St Thomas register.
