Marlands - Ashton U Lyne
« on: Thursday 17 March 05 16:45 GMT (UK) »
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has Marlands from Ashton U Lyne in their family tree.

There seems to be hundreds of them, all calling their children the same names, which has caused me no end of confusion!

I've been concentrating on my dads side of the family but would now like to continue with my mums side - Marland/Hunt/Hogg/Bower-Woodward/Shaw/Askew. (Think some of them came from the Rotherham area though, or moved from Lancashire to Rotherham)

Thanks,
Catherine

Hi,
One of my Corbett ancestors, Edward married a Betty Marland in 1866 in Ashton-Under-Lyne. They lived at 133, Park St. Ashton. Edward & Betty had a son, James born in 1869 and I think a daughter, Bertha born 1873. Edward Corbett died in 1875 and is buried at Dukinfield cemetery. I think Betty Corbett nee Marland married a John Shaw in 1876 in Stalybridge.
Do you have a connection to this Betty Marland?

Lin.

PS, and yes, you are quite right,  there are a lot of Marland's in Ashton!

Hi,

Not really done a lot of research on this side yet. The Marlands in my line are -

my mum Linda May Marland B.07/05/1947
my grandma Lucilla Margaret Marland b. 19/03/1930
gg grandad - Charles Robert Marland b. 08/1899 (sister Doris b.1896, brother William b.1897) m. Frances May Bower-Woodward
ggg grandad - Robert William Marland b.c1871 m. Margaret Hogg?

On the 1871 census, his family was -
James Marland b.c1829 Coal Miner
Elizabeth  wife  b.c1825
Margaret  19  Cotton Operative
Mary Ellen  17
John James  15  Coal Miner
Thomas  13
Harriet  11
Theodore Percival  8
Samuel  4 or 7?
George Edward  2
Robert William  10mths
Croft Street, Failsworth RG10/4065

On the 1881 census, James wife is Harriott though, so I think Elizabeth died and he remarried.

With all the James/Roberts/Samuels etc, theres bound to be a connection somewhere, just take a while to find it I think!!  :)

Hello Catherine,
I too haven't researched the Marland family. I do however have copies of the Ashton-Under-Lyne census for 1841, 1851, 1871-1901. So, if you think a few look ups might help... just say. I had noticed the Marland families whilst checking through the census returns for my Corbett line, but did not follow them properly. I have so far only really concentrated on my Corbett line.
It would be great if we could make a connection!

Hi,

If you could look up James Marland and Elizabeth on the 1841 and 51 census, that would be great. Probably wouldnt be able to find Elizabeth because I dont know her maiden name, but James Marland might be with his parents and siblings. His place of birth is His place of birth is Hurst? Lancs on 1871 census, but Ashton U Lyne on later censuses. Dont know whether Hurst is part of or next to Ashton?

Will be researching Marlands more over next few weeks, so will  let u know if I find any connection.

Hi Catherine,
The 1851 census lists the following...
HO 107/2233  A279 Page 20.
Leighs Farm, Park Estate, Ashton.
James Marland Head M 23 Coal Miner, Ashton.
Elizabeth Marland Wife, M 21. Ashton.

Hurst is an area of Ashton, it is situated about a mile and a half north from Ashton Town. There were a few cotton mills and coal pits in the Hurst area, but on the whole it was quite a rural area. I lived at Hurst myself as a child.

I will list the other Marland entries on the 1851 census and will email them to you, if that is ok? (There are too many for me to type up on this website). I will also check the 1841 census for you.

Hi Catherine,
Found James Marland on the 1841 census of Ashton living at Hurst Brook. Sorry for the delay but the 1841 census has no surname or address index, so I had to fully search through.

HO 107 H533/2
Hurst Brook.

John Marland 35 Coal Miner Y.
Harriet Marland 35 Y.
James Marland 13 Coal Miner Y.
George Marland 11 Y.
Mary Marland 9 Y.
Elizabeth Marland 4 Y
John Marland 2 Y.

There were other members of the Marland family living at Hurst Brook, I have listed those along with my findings from the 1851 census of Ashton for you. I will email them directly.

Sincerely.
Lin.

Hello!

Brand new to the site and came across this whilst trying to search for some very old articles regarding family.

My father is called Mark Marland, my grandfather is called Robert William Marland, my great grandfather was called Robert William Marland, my great great grandfather was called Robert William Marland and my great great great grandfather was also of the same name.

My Grandfather used to live in what is now a hotel somewhere around the outskirts of Manchester. He then moved the family up to Blackpool, where we still live in and around the town today.

You mention a few names above with Coal Miners next to them. These could have been the brothers who found fortune in either America or Australia (I can't remember the story exactly). They went looking for gold but struck oil and made a bomb!
