i
i have a great grandad called charles stewart born 1848 in toronto canada
he emigrated to england about 1871-1881.
my mother said he worked on a fair as a travelling showman.
he was living in stockport cheshire in1881 and died in 1913.he was married to sarah knott and she died very young in1899 aged 30 leaving two small boys one of them my grandad george william.
my great grandfather was black[hope this is not disrespectful to anyone] this may make it easier to trace him and allow us to find out his origin.
please if anyone could help reply to this.this search has been going on for over 20 years.
have just found this site and hope someone can help me.

Hi Karyn

he was living in stockport cheshire in1881

The 1881 shows him living as a lodger in London.  He was unmarried at that time but I cannot find a marriage to a Sarah Knott

His birthyear varies quite a lot

In 1881 it was 1851

In 1891 it was 1857 and it was in 1891 that he was living in Stockport.  Sarah was only b 1868 but in Ireland so I wonder if they perhaps married there which would explain why I can't find a marriage entry

1901 it's 1858 - still in Cheshire with his 2 young sons

1911 - 1849 - still in Stockport

I was trying to find the marriage as a copy of the certificate should show his fathers name and occupation

Hi Karyn.
I got my DNA from Ancestry two days ago, I messaged you there to let you know Sarah Knott was my grt Grandma I'm more than certain she is Charles' wife, and yes you're right about the different years for Charles birth but I think 1858 is correct, Sarah was actually born in 1870, her birth certificate names her as Jane Knott but on her baptism she was named as Sarah Jane those are also her mothers Christian names. I've been searching for Sarah for many months with the help of a dear friend, it's in the last two days through the genious of DNA and my friend that I've found her.
If you can contact me privately through Ancestry I have other private information and also some certificates to share with you.
