Emily Curtis - Wateringbury
« on: Friday 05 February 10 16:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I have an interest in an Emily Curtis - Professor of Music and Singing who appears on the 1871 census for Liverpool sub registration district Islington - parish Christchurch. She is shown as a widow aged 30 b Wateringbury abt 1841. I can find no record of her either before or after that census. I have assumed she retained her married name but have also looked for all marriages of Emily's born 1841 +/-  a few years to a Curtis but with no success. There are no births of an Emily Curtis that I can find that would fit for the Malling district.  So I'm looking for some inspiration!

My other hope is that her qualification (assuming it's accurate) must have been awarded by some recognized music institution sometime around 1860-1870 - does anyone have any ideas where to start - or other leads?

My interest stems from the fact that at the same address in Liverpool was my gg grandfather Alfred Avery and his daughter Maud- our family name later changed to Curtis and this is the only "connection" I've ever found.......

Thanks

Strange one!

the Avery family are altogether in 1861
RG9 48 9 15

but in 1871 when Alfred and 2 of the children (Maud and Alice) are visiting along with Emily Curtis, I see his wife and the other children are with her parents
RG10 1634 110 25

or at least that is what it looks like!

Have you got any of them in 1881?

Thaks all for you help and advice.

I've done a FreeBMd search for all Emily's registerd B Malling between Sep 1840 & Jun 1842 - there are around 20. I then checked all these for a marriage to a Curtis on FreeBMd but in all registration districts/counties and there's no match so it remains a mystery.

@ lizdb - no I don't have any of them after 1871 Alfred Avery and his daughter (Evangeline) Maud "disappear" as does Emily Curtis. Yes you are right his wife Lavinia is with her parents in London in 1871 together with their other two children, Louis and Alfred who I have full subsequent histories for.

I believe that Alfred changed the family name from Avery to Curtis around 1900 as evidenced by births of other family members at this time (i.e registrations change from Avery to Avery Curtis with Avery as a second given name.)

Terry, I see that young Maud AVERY was born overseas - so perhaps the Avery's met Emily there, so she might have married and been widowed overseas??

Along those lines, and this may be nothing more than coincidence...
the 1851 census lists three Emily's born around 1841 +/-2 in Wateringbury. One of those is Emily MARSHALL, living with her Uncle Edward MARSHALL, an "Annuitant - East India Company". A possible connection? In 1861 she's a pupil at a "posh" school in Lincolnshire, perhaps the sort of place that would turn out Music Professors?

Of possible relevance - there is a death for an Emily CURTIS in Liverpool, Sep qtr 1888, age 49 (i.e born around 1839).

Thanks Nigelo,

That's extremely useful. I'll work through those - I'd missed the death in Liverpool for some reason!  I had seen the Emily Marshall possibility but I think she married a John Heathorne  - I'll revist it all though. Thanks again for your reply.
