Macclesfield 1914 -1915
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 11:32 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information about my great grandmother Violet Jennie Smallman nee Cooper and could have also been k/a Clifford.  She was living in Frances Street, Macclesfield in February 1915 (my grandmother was born on the 14th).  Violet's occupation was attendant at a "lunatic Asylum.  Does anyone know where the Asylum may have been?  Parkside Hospital maybe?

I am not sure if she was married or not - probably not.  My grandmother did not know her biological father and he is not named on her birth certificate, but she was told his name was George Knight - the story goes that he was killed in France before she was born - I'm not sure if this is true or not and know nothing about him.

Needle in a hay stack!  Does anyone have any ideas of where I would start to find any records from the Macclesfield area -  would be fantastic if there was an on-line site as I live in the Land Downunder.

Hello tollowie, It is highly likely that it was Parkside Hospital were she worked the site below if you look under Workhouse Locations, then Cheshire, then Macclesfield you will find reference to the development of the workhouse and links which may help.  The workhouse and aslylum were next to one another.
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
There is also a link on this page to the Cheshire Archives which holds a great deal of records from Parkside.  You will need to look through their catologue to see if they have any staff records.
Cheshire Archives staff are extremely  helpful, but they may charge a fee.
If you add another topic with the title Parkside Hospital, you may get more response from people more local than me with more expert knowledge of the hospital.

Hello there !  Thanks for the reply.

It's a funny family - I will try to be brief.

Violet Jennie SMALLMAN's  (my maternal great-grandmother) mother's maiden name was Jane COOPER and Violet is the daughter of Jane's first husband Arthur SMALLMAN
- in between Jane's first and second marriage V J was known-as Violet Jennie COOPER

Violet Jennie SMALLMAN did then marry Henry COOPER - not related, well I don't think so anyway!!
~~~~~~~~--------------
My maternal grandmother's name was Clara Knight SMALLMAN - born before Violet's marriage to Henry COOPER.  I think she was an unmarried mother (1915 !!! )
I am trying to find out about Violet's life in Macclesfield and Clara's biological supposed father George Knight, killed in 1914 WWI.  I only know his name from my grandmother Clara - there is no real proof of who he was except KNIGHT was her middle name.  My grandmother (Clara) died 5 years ago knowing nothing about George.
I have not posted many things on anything like Rootschats - so please forgive my muddled notes.
By the way- here's the Macclesfield War memorial and the list of men who died from the town in both wars.
Can't see a George Knight on there.
Plenty of them were my ancestors though,including my grandad Albert Worth in WW2  :'(
