The Christian name Amelia
« on: Thursday 11 February 10 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I am sure some of you 'transcribers' can help me with this.  I have various records for a female called variously Meler, Nelus(?) nelix(?) and even Mable who I believe to be Amelia. The dates and places all match, not the first names. Can anyone confirm that these are 'pet' names for Amelia?  In hope.  RosemaryJoan
Cully, Bannister, McConnell, Wallace (Co. Armagh)  Anderson, Ross (Co. Antrim), Gray, Truesdale (Co. Down)
McCormick (Killyleagh and finally Belfast)

I can see Meler as a phonetic attempt at Amelia.  Never heard of Nelus or Nelix.  Mable is usually a misspelling of Mabel which is unconnected with Amelia.

But of course people can acquire all sorts of non-standard pet names!

In whay documents do these appear?  Could it just be a case of difficult handwriting?

Birth index on Ancestry 1845 - Amelia
Baptism transcript 1845 - Nelus??
1851 census -
1861 - Meler
1871 - Amelia (can't find a marriage record)
1900 - Amelia (remarried)

I have just found her on someone else's family tree, and they have assumed that these entries are all for the same Amelia - so I think I'll stop asking questions.  I just thought it might have come from the Bristol accent (??)  RosemaryJoan

There weren't many girls called "Meler" of the right age in 1861!  I thought that must be her.

You said you couldn't find a marriage to Isaac EVANS, her "husband" in the 1871 census.  It looks as though they may have made a rather belated trip up the aisle - unless you have already ruled this one out?

Marriage Jun qtr 1885

Yes, that is them.  They took their time didn't they?  They had quite a large collection of children by then.  They had them all baptised.  I wonder how they managed that without a previous marriage.  Half of the baptism records call her Amelia and the other half Melus.  I found this out after posting my query.  RosemaryJoan
