Leicestershire Records Office

Does anybody visit the RO and would mind some extra research; happy to cover expenses etc.

I understand that it's in Long Street, Wigston Magna, Leicester, LE18 2AH?

I have just obtained the Death Cert of a relative, who died in October 1943, Market Harborough and want to reference the 2 addresses shown on the Certificate to see who he was with in the couple of years before he died. (The informants name is sadly almost illegible) back to 1939 if possible.

I can see from the RO website that they have Electoral Registers for the whole of Leicester, and I assume that altho' they wont be indexed by name, they will be organized by street address?

Please let me know if you can help and I will PM details.

Many thanks indeed.

Mort

Greeting’s & Welcome to the Leicestershire Threads.

The only snag I can see with your idea to obtain Address.

Is that the years you wish to research fall during WW II
Where there was a block on Electoral Index Records.
For National Security.

If we had the Death dates then I can but try and match these up
Through Parish Burial Registers hopefully obtaining the addresses this way.

Thanks for the response Mike  :)

I hadnt thought about WW2 suppressing the Electoral Roll  :(

How about 1938/9 tho ? (assuming he is there)

Its the names living at the addresses that I have that I'm interested in.

I have 2 addresses from his death certificate; the event address and his Home address -  and the informant (who lived where he actually died) is almost illegible.

His burial detail and (cemetery) location - would that Parish Burial register show who paid for his funeral?

If you are happy to look on this basis, I'm very grateful and will PM the details.

Many thanks much appreciated.

Mort

Hallo again, I just saw you were online, so thought I'd ask if everything is OK?

Many thanks for the PM update, was just concerned that notifications may have been missed.

Many thanks again, Mort

Much appreciated Mike - thanks again for your diligent work on the Electoral Roll.

Bit of a sad ending really.

So given what you said about the burial - According to the policies of the Institute the deceased are returned to the Parish of their Abode and therefore become the responsibility of that Parish to fund their Burial. - as he died in the same Parish that he lived in, do the cemetery records not exist in the Records Office - hence having to approach MH council itself ?

Thanks again, Mort

Greeting’s Again. ….Mort 29.

The Institute in fact comes under the Parish of Bowden Magna
And not any Parishes within Market Harborough Borough.

As it was a burial at the Municipal Cemetery without a Service at a Church beforehand …..
The Records Office do not hold any details  otherwise I would have followed it through to obtain the details and posted them

The only way to know the where abouts the plot is
Is to get in touch with the Cemeteries Department using the No’. I gave.

Plus I would not think there would be a Headstone.      .

Ah, OK, I wrongly assumed that as the Institute was on the same Road as the Municipal Cemetery, and that his recorded domicile was only a bit further into MH, it was all covered by the one Parish.

Many thanks, have already made contact with a helpful lady in MH who will relieve me of £11.50 to locate the records.

Dont forget my offer please !

Again my thanks, Mort
