Kington - Herefordshire. Hotel Help.
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 15:32 GMT (UK) »
Hope someone here can offer some assistance on a problem I have I am looking for the Milner or Milner's Hotel, Kington.
The period I am looking at is 1850's to 1860.

Also does anyone know where the Assembly Rooms are in Kington about the same period.

We have the Mitre Inn which was one of about 20 listed in the 1861 census.  In 1851 there seemed to be only about four specifically named.  Certainly no other licenced premises that come close to your 'Milners'.

However, in the 1841/51/61 period there was a family called MILNER in Kington who were wine merchants (probably originally from Shropshire), a son later (1861) being an Estate Agent & Auctioneer.

Sorry, can't find any references to Assembly Rooms.  Hope someone else can help with that.

Milners is now called the Burton Hotel.  Kington Museum will have records and maybe  early pictures. www.kingtonmuseum.co.uk

Thanks for that Puffcat!

That's been a great help! The Milners Hotel first opened in 1851, it then changed name in 1859 to Gorely's Hotel, becoming the Burton House Hotel in 1862.
I am now led to believe that the Assembly Rooms were either part of the Burton House Hotel or behind it! But more work needed on that thank you for your information.
Kington Museum have been helpful in the past but I've only visited and had assistance, I thought they closed during the winter months.

There is a large building attached to the Burton which was a ballroom,. it is now a gym and swimming pool. That could have been the assembly rooms.

As Kington had no Public Assembly Rooms in C18 and C19 and so rooms at the Oxford Arms, Lower Swan and later at the Burton were used.  An Assembly Room was added to the Burton in 1856.
Assemblies were regularly held, and documented including one in 1808 which ended in a challenge to a duel with pistols between two members of the local gentry !
