BAPTISM SCULCOATES, HULL
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 20:53 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any suggestions where someone born in the early 1900s in Chapman Street, Sculcoats, Hull might have been baptised?

Hi Oreo
How about giving us a name to look for and we might be able to find it.
Or you could try Familysearch.org or Yorkshire BMD for more info.

I've already checked Familysearch.org and can't fiind it on there.  Have a copy of the birth certificate already.  Cannot find any trace of the father named on the birth certificate - no birth, marriage or death.  Wondered if the name had been written down incorrectly and wanted to check it against baptismal record.

The father's name was Thomas Henry Douglas McDonald Hewson.  Deceased at time of child's birth in May 1909.  Have tried lots of combinations of these names and different spellings.  May have come from Scotland.

Hi,
Looked on the net for Sculcoates. In 1900's the registration of births etc came under Anlaby. There are 2 big Churches there called St Stephen and St Pauls.
I am still abit confused as to who is the child. Is Thomas the Father or the child?? Whats the childs name?
I did find a Thomas H  Hewson, aged 16 on the 1901 census living at home  in Kingston upon Hull, in the civil parish of Sculcoates.
His Dad is also called Thomas aged 57 a Confectionary Rullyman born in Welburn, Yorkshire. Mother is Kate aged 41 born Hull, sister is Mary J aged 6 and a brother called Edward N born Hull aged 27.
Anothor Thomas Hewson is aged 20 on the 1901, a border in Sculcoates from Derby.
There is a John F Hewson born in West Sculcoates, 1909, is this the child.  I found this on the free site Yorkshire BMD.
Hope this is your Thomas

Thomas was the father.  The child was called Douglas.  The birth certificate says the father is deceased, so he must have died 1908/9.  The mother remarried.  Marriage certificate says she was a widow.  Perhaps Thomas died overseas - can find no record of his death in the UK.
Will check out the churches you suggest.  Thanks.

Just for info:  This is the child

Births Jun 1909
HEWSON    Douglas McDonald        Sculcoates    9d   127

In 1911 he is 1yr and 10 months with his mother Marion Hewson in Sculcoates - a widow. both born Hull
She had been married 5 years and had 3 children but only Douglas had survived by 1911.  She seems to be some kind of shop keeper or shop worker.

I had a look but can't see a possible marriage for a "Marion" and "Hewson" in about 1906. Or a likely marriage for a Thomas Henry to "Marion".

OREO - did it give an occupation on the birth cert or did it just say " "deceased"?

If son was born April-Jun 1909 then he must have died in the 9 months before that so looking for a death after April 1908.  I couldn't see anyone likely on the area.

Had a quick look at Scotland's people but didn't come up with much.

Have you been able to identify the other two children who were born and died?  Maybe their birth and death certificates may be of help.

I saw a Marion Hewson born in 1906 and thought she was a likely candidate but then saw a Marion Hewson alive with a family in 1911  - so perhaps not.

???

Milly,

Thanks for your help.  That is the correct birth. The father was a commercial traveller according to birth certificate - so could have died in another part of country.  I couldn't find any likely matches though.

And you still don't have a marriage for him? That is quite odd as his widow says born HULL and the baby was born HULL so it would seem reasonable that they married locally.

However being a commercial traveller means he would have been all over the place so who knows.

Any idea where the McDonald fits in? That might help.

I don't know where the McDonald fits in.  I had wondered about that.
