Hi alb,   you don't give a timeframe so don't know if this will be of help or not.    Index is free but there is a fee for ordering the cert

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/vitalrecords/

It is an interesting website --   go to Home  and there is much more.

Good luck!

Did he die in the war or did he die later on?  Do you know what branch of the service he was in?  Was Gordon born in Wisconsin?  Was he living in the US prior to his marriage to Jean?  Any idea of Jean's age?

Did he die in the US or elsewhere?

There is a birth record for a James G. Wood born 25 Aug. 1904 in Milwaukee Co.  Does that match up with what you know?  In the 1910 Census, there's a 5 yr. old James G. Wood living in Milwaukee with parents Wm. E. and Hilda and sister Louisa, age 4.  I'm not finding any subsequent census records that seem to fit James G./Gordon J.

A WW2 Draft has James G Wood 1904. Natiive of Wisconsin. Enlisted in Michigan. Unfortuately no scan which would have been useful.

Sorry WW2 enlistment - not that it made alot of difference - since it said nothing.

That's an army enlistment form, not a draft record, so I think the original was just a punch card as described here:  http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2006/spring/aad-ww2.html  It says he was residing in Cook Co. Illinois.  If they married there, there are some vital records indexes at www.cookcountygenealogy.com, but I don't see any likely marriages for James/Gordon and a Jean in the 1930's.
