They were married 1889 in Vic, Australia and two children's births recorded in Vic in 1891 & 1893, Orbituary for Alice who died 1931 in Goldendale, Washington says 5 births in all and 2 boys & 2 girls mourn her passing - probably one died young

I don't see any passenger lists for this family in the 1890's, but a WWI Draft Registration Card has Wilfred Reginald Hill born 22 Nov. 1895 in St. Louis, Missouri and living in Portland, Oregon.  He was listed as born Nov. 1894 on the 1900 Census, though.

According to the 1910 Census, George filed his first papers to become naturalized, so those records could potentially have a ship's name and date on them.  The issue is finding them.

It appears that George sailed from Sydney to Victoria, BC, Canada in 1916 and was still an alien.  It was written in on the manifest that he was in the US from 1896-1915.  George also sailed from Auckland, NZ to Seattle, Washington on the SS Niagara in 1920.  There are manifest markings indicating that he did subsequently pursue naturalization.  It is written in "Nats. 6-28-34 #21-6565".  According to this - http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/Manifests/natlty/ - the date may be his naturalization date or when his trip was verified.

Just a few snippets. On the Canada, Ocean Arrivals (Form 30a) 12 Nov 1920 he was going to see his sons in Portland Oregon. Described as Mechanic.  On the Seattle Passenger & Crew List 12 Nov 1920 he named his sister Mrs E Solomon. Gladstone Road. Gisborne. State ORE. City or Town Albany as the nearest relative or friend from the country he came.

The names of the children verify to me we are looking at the right George & Alice Hill. The orbituary for Alice says she was survived by 4 children. Any clues on which child died before her and when? Also can you explain why George applied for citizenship? Could he not be permanent resident or work in USA without being naturalised? Also is there any way of finding out the reason/date of their divorce?
Thanks for all the info thus far

I assume he could work without being naturalized, as many people did.  Perhaps he just wanted to become a citizen.

On the Oregon death index, there is a Wilfred R. Hill who died in 1954 in Multnomah Co.

Wilfred also looks as if he travelled to Australia as a tourist -  1917 on the Niagra coming from Sydney to British Columbia. Motor Mechanic from Oregon.
