Orders of filiation, Cheshire?
« on: Monday 15 February 10 17:30 GMT (UK) »
I note from a posting in the Lancashire section of RootsChat that there is an index of orders of filiation (Bastardy Orders) for Lancashire. Is there anything similar for Cheshire?
I'm looking at my ancestor William Taylor (born Timperley 6 November, christened 27 November 1808). Only the mother's name, Sarah, is recorded. Sarah had another child, Thomas, christened in Stockport 5 December 1819 - this time the PR states 'illegitimate'. Both of these illegitimately born boys started businesses (baker and provision dealer respectively) quite early in life and I wonder whether they may have received some kind of settlement from their father.

Hi, I'm sure there is - I know Lincolnshire has Bastardy Bonds and Bastardy Orders in its archives.  You need to contact

Cheshire East Council  Telephone: 0300 123 55 00
Westfields, Middlewich Road, Sandbach, CW11 1HZ

Sorry I can't find an e-mail address.  Everything was much simpler before "they" decided to divide Cheshire into two for admin purposes.

Just realised you might also like to try:

Heritage Library
Central Library, Wellington Road South
Stockport SK1 3RS

Tel 0161 474 4530

localheritagelibrary[-- at --]stockport.gov.uk

They hold old parish records, so may have Bastardy Bonds and Orders.  At least you can e-mail them and get a quick answer.  My husband has found them very helpful when asking for help with his ancestors.

Thanks for those, Lizzie - I'll give them both a ring in the morning. Fingers crossed!

Thanks Jen, didn't realise it was necessary for an e-mail address that is publicly listed on a website.
