Strychnine Poisioning
« on: Wednesday 17 February 10 13:54 GMT (UK) »
Sarah Sellwood (b 1811 Hamble) died of Strychnine Poisoning in late 1880, Hartfield - the inquest was 9 October.
While not a nice way "to go" :-X, would this have been an accident? and where might I find details of the inquest?

What exactly does the death certificate say about the cause of death - does it just say strychnine poisoning, or more than that?

I don't see a death registration for a Sarah SELLWOOD or SELWOOD anywhere in England & Wales in the last two quarters of 1880 or the first two quarters of 1881 ???

Strychnine was used not just as a pesticide for killing small birds and animals but also as a stimulant, laxative and a cure for stomach upsets.  It was used by sportsmen to improve their performance.

Unfortunately the medical dose was sufficient to kill some people and so its use was very accident prone.

Thankyou both.
At present, all I have is from ttp://theweald.org/sitesearchb.asp with the inquest and burial date. But thanks to the link from avm228 I now know where to go next.

According to the information on the site you linked to her name at death would have been Sarah WHEATLEY (SELLWOOD having been her maiden name).

In which case this death reference looks likely:

Death, Dec qtr 1880

Sarah WHEATLEY, aged 69

East Grinstead 2b 75

If you get the death certificate, you will see what the coroner's verdict was as to the cause of death, including whether accidental or not.
