Just started and stuck already
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 17:08 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me please?

On the 1911 census it says  my grandfather James O'Reilly was born in County Longford circa 1870 and married  Jane O'Reilly.  Where can I look for his birth, marriage and death records?

Thanks
Maureen

Maureen, I can't be any help to you on this one  (though plenty of others will) but your post title Just started and stuck already sounded so woebegone, and then it got moved within a couple of minutes, that I just had to say hello, welcome to Rootschat, and it will get better!

See the Irish Civil Index on familysearch for an index to BMD registrations , and the various topics on the Ireland Resources section on searching the index, ordering certs, details included on birth, marriage and death certs etc...

note that Civil registration started in 1864, and for anything before that date you will have to research parish records.

Hi maureen
http://longford.brsgenealogy.com/
the above website has 1 James OReilly married 1867 and only 3 births between 1836 and 1856 regerstration is free so you can search for your ancestor then to look at a record is  5 euros only having 1 marriage might be worth a look to see if wife is Jane. on the records I have looked at for our irish relations you will get the father and sometimes the mother as well then you can enter the fathers name in the birth search to hopefully get closer.
Hope this helps in your search
Happy hunting
Ian :)

If James was born c1870 then that does not look like the right marriage...

probably the best place to start is by looking for the marriage. Both the Ireland and England/Wales 1911 census forms have details of how many years a couple where married which will give an approximate year to start the search.

The next step is to establish Jane's maiden name by ordering a birth cert for one of their children, this makes the marriage search much easier.

Were any of their children born in Ireland ?  If so maybe they married in Ireland...

Hi and thanks for all your help.
On the 1911 census it says he had been married for 8 years, therefore married  around 1903 and had four children to this marriage. The first 3  were born in Cavan and then 1 in Leitrim.  There  is also another child, a daughter, which must be to another marriage.
My fathers birth certificate states his mothers name as Jane Reilly.

if you want to post details on the children births (name, places, approx birth year) I can have search for them.  The locations might help to narrow down a location for the marriage for James and Jane.

p.s. do both James and Jane list Longford as place of birth ?
