Henry Dillon - publican? - Gorton
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 22:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

 :)

I have been trying to find out about Henry Dillon who was a soldier in the 47th Regiment of Foot.  I have been getting some help on the Armed Forces board but have now got a new lead which makes be think he was working as a publican in Manchester (possibly Gorton) before he died.

Henry Dillon married Adelaide Ghoff/Goff circa 1856 but I don't know where.  Their first child, Henry George, was born 24 Mar 1860 (registered male Dillon Elham 2a 751).  The next two children were baptised in Canada; Michael John 12 Oct 1862 and Mary Anne 22 Jan 1865.  Further children were born in Malta and Italy; George born ca1872 Malta, Priscilla born ca1874 Italy, Alexander James born ca1879 Malta and Mary R born ca1882 Malta.

By 1891 a widowed Adelaide was back in Manchester with the children living at 52 Elizabeth Street, Gorton.  In 1901, they were still in Elizabeth Street, Adelaide at number 52 and eldest son, Henry George and his family at number 48.  Henry George married Carmella Darmanin who was Maltese.  Adelaide died in 1915 (2nd qtr Chorlton 8c 1000).

I have just confirmed a marriage of the 2nd son, Michael John Dillon to Mary Buck on 4 Mar 1916 at St Francis Church, Gorton and on the certificate he records his father as Henry Dillon, publican (deceased).  He was in Malta in 1882 and died before 1891 but I don't know where.

Also the witnesses on Michael John Dillons marriage certificate were Henry and Concetta Turner and I can't find out who they were either.

Also Priscilla Dillon born ca 1874 in Italy goes missing after the 1891 census.

The census references are:-

Class: RG13; Piece: 3685; Folio: 92; Page: 15
Class: RG12; Piece: 3172; Folio 80; Page 4; GSU roll: 6098282

The link to the Armed Forces board is:-

Please can anyone help me sort this mess out  ???.

Well there are two Henry Dillon deaths in Chorlton district which would cover Gorton:

1884 3rd quarter, vol 8c page 524    Henry Dillon age 65
1888 2nd quarter, vol 8c page 406   Henry Dillon age 57

If Henry fathered a child in 1882, I suppose the 57 year old is the more likely one. And there seems to be a corresponding burial in Philips Park on the Manchester records:
3rd Apr 1888 Philips Park RC section F grave no 572

Burial record might give address and occupation?

Thank you Barbara.

I noticed the 1888 death shortly after I had made the posting but didn't notice the 1884 one or the burial which corresponds with the 1888 death.  I am going to order the 1888 death certificate I think.  Fingers crossed it will be the right one.

Luzzu, that is your man 1888 in Phillips park and hoping to get over there this afternoon if my son comes back with my car soon?
Roman catholic grave section is a bit tricky when it come to common/paupers graves. He is buried with 5 other people and none with the same surname. Many gravestones for these graves are buried with up to a foot of soil/grass over them, but will try an locate it for you if i can.
Just need me car now  ;D

If you get this before you leave, please can I ask for a pic of  section E Roman Catholic too.  The actual grave is 1107 but I know there is absolutely no chance of you finding it so don't even spend time looking as we've discussed this before re the flood (Patrick Grant buried 1870) but if I could get a picture of the general area whilst you are there.

Top man Migky, knew you'd find it!  :D

So we might be looking for a Henry Dillon born c. 1831?

As for Adelaide I can see a marriage 1850 but not to Henry:
Sep 1850 Dover, Kent vol 5 page 159
Joseph Goff
Adelaide Hariette/Henrietta Louisa Hortense Knox

Hi Barbara,

I think Adelaide was a lot younger than Henry.  Her estimated year of birth from the 1891 and 1901 census is 1845 which means she was only 15/16 when she gave birth to Henry George in 1860.

However she died in 1915 aged 73 which would give a year of birth of 1842 which sounds a bit more sensible to me.
