Schools late 19thc London
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 08:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Has someone done research on grammar schools/private schools/victualler schools in the London/Middlesex/Surrey area from late 19th century?
It is a huge topic and unreliable i've been told as records were that rigourously kept.
I'm wanting to track my grandfather who went to a school between c1890-1900.  He was the son of a licenced victualler in the context of the family being 'upwardly mobile'.  He was born in the East End (just up from MEOT).
Any finds joyously collected!

Hi Jk22

What is the name of the person you are researching? London school records will be at the London Metropolitan Archives. If you know the street he lived in it is best to check schools for that area. Is there a story that he went to a victuallers school etc.

Hello Ben,
Thanks for your reply.
I will go back to the LMA.
In my search i learnt that licenced victuallers were a very active group of business men and that they had their own school set up in ?Kennington for children.  I did not get far with this lead.
Kind regards
Julie

Hi

If they survive school records will be very informative giving name, address, occupation of father, date of birth and all sorts of other genealogical info including their admission and discharge date.

My great grandmother was admitted to a school in Islington in May 1893 aged 3 and a half and left that school in November 1897 to go to a girls school.
