Henry Thomas READING
« on: Sunday 28 February 10 14:31 GMT (UK) »
Henry was a convict sent to Australia in 1825, he received his pardon in 1848.  I am trying to find out if he married and had any children.

I am lead to believe that he could have lived in the Tamworth area and a possible date of death is 1879.

Any help would be great.

Hi Cowpig,

In the NSW BDM's there is only one death for a Henry Reading and the details fit your possible date.

Year :1878
Name: READING , Henry T
Where is father and mother details normally would be is the following information : AGE 82 YEARS  DIED BARRABA
Death registered at :TAMWORTH
Registration Number :9661
Barraba was a mining town near Tamworth.
Here is the link for you to look at this record.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?SessionID=20311675&event=births

There are two weddings listed : one is a tad early considering his pardon and one a tad late considering his age, however either of these marriages could be his. Here is the link so you can view them.

http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=marriages

There are also four children, Henry, William, Thomas and Phoebe listed to a Henry and Emma whose births are registered in Tamworth, as well as Elizabeth and Mary who are registered to Phoebe and Henry with no registered town listed.

You can find these entries here  http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?SessionID=20311675&event=births

Interestingly Phoebe Reading died at Barraba too,  in 1877 aged 56.

If Henry married before he was pardoned, there are Microfiche available of convicts requests to marry (the State Archives and State Library have these as well as many of the regional libraries)

The State archives indeed mention his pardon in their online service http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online#convicts    (go to the Pardon section and then enter his name).

Cheers
Siouxsie

Dear Cowpig,

If you wanted any certificates you can order any of these from the BDM online ......or a much cheaper option is to get transcriptions from one of the three registered transcription agents who are listed here
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/howToTraceYouFamTree.htm#TranscriptionAgent

Good luck with your search.

If you are not near a library, one of the fellow rootschatters may have easy access to the convict requests to marry.

Cheers

Not exactly what you are looking for but may be of interest.

In 1885 Hy. READING held 2400 acres at his holding 'Ironbark' in Tamworth police district and PO town of Barraba  where he had 26 horses, 30 head of cattle  342 sheep and two pigs!

Convict records (Forenames are reversed in one but it's possible it's still him)

Public record Office (UK) HO 10/54
NSW and Tasmania, Australia, Convict Pardons, 1834-1859 > New South Wales > Pardons > 1846-1849
Pardon Approval 29 April 1848, READING Hy Thomas, Ship Midas 2, arrival 1827,
Place of conviction: Middlesex, 6 Dec 1827, life

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892 - HO 26; Piece: 31; Page: 158
England > Middlesex > 1825 > Image 142
Thomas Henry READING, age 17, crime: housebreaking,
tried at Old Bailey - October Session 1825, sentence: death

Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868,
1826-1828 > Convicts transported > HO 11/6 > Image 42
Henry Thomas READING,
Where convicted: Middlesex Gaol Delivery, 8 Decenber 1825, life
Vessel: Midas, Voyage Date: 7 Oct 1826
Colony: New South Wales

NSW, Australia,Convict Registers of Conditional and Absolute Pardons 1791-1867 > Conditional > 1847
READING Henry Thomas vessel: Midas

There is also this odd record:
NSW and Tasmania, Australia, Convict Pardons, 1834-1859 > Tasmania > Pardons > 1841-1842
Henry Thos READING, Midas arrived 1827, convicted for life, Middlesex G D, trial 8 December 1825
I think it has been indexed wrongly as the earlier records in the same sequence are of tickets of leave in NSW not Tas.

I cannot see him on the Convict Applications to Marry however H T READING, ship Midas,  had 10 shillings in the Bank of New South Wales, unfortunately un-dated.  No record of him withdrawing the money.

There is a record of the trial of Thomas Winter PRESTON, and HenryThomas READING,  housebreaking, 27th October 1825, in papers from the Old Bailey.  As above - the forenames are reversed so not 100% sure it's him.

There was another trial of Thomas READING in 1824 where he was acquitted but no way of telling if this is the same person.

A Thomas READING was a witness at another trial in 1824.  In another trial a Thomas RIORDAN said he was married bigamously 1801, using the name Thomas READING to Ann BARTON at St Paul, Covent Garden.  Makes interesting reading!
