Which Father would you go with?
« on: Monday 01 March 10 20:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a birth record from IGI and confirmed on SP for Ann Marshall born in Dunning, Perth. Parents Jas Marshall & Eliz Rutherford.

Ann's Marriage in 1862 to George Lee have her parents as Robert Marshall & Elizabeth Rutherford. (Father deceased at his time)

Her death certificate in 1890 has her parents as James Marshall and Rutherford.

Same for George Lee - Can't find any record of his birth.
Marriage - parents are John Lee & Ann Mathison (both parents are deceased at this time)
Death - parents are John Lee and Ann Stott

One of George and Ann's children has parents as Robert and Ann at birth, but George and Ann on marriage and death certs.
Which ones should I rely on most?
I can't find death records for any of George or Ann's parents to verify.

Thanks
Heather

Could this be George with Stott family (maternal side based on his death entry?) in 1851:

Mary Stott 77, Weavers Widow, Montrose, Forfarshire
Elizabeth Stott 29, daughter, dress maker b. Brechin
George Lee 10, grandson b. Old Deer, Aberdeen

Address: Meikle Mill, Brechin Angus

One possible entry for Ann's birth, slightly earlier than the age reflected on the 1871 census:

ANN MARSHALL Birth: 26 SEP 1837 Dunning, Perth
Parents: JAS. MARSHALL and ELIZ. RUTHERFORD

Added:  :P Just realised you already have this entry from IGI!

I wonder if Ann put down her paternal grandfather's name down in error on her marriage entry?: From 1841:

Robert Marshall 70, carter
Isabella Marshall 70
James Marshall 30
Elisabeth Marshall 30
Isabella Marshall 10
Robert Marshall 7
Ann Marshall 3
Peter Crow   25
Elisabeth Crow 30
Mary Crow 9
Janet Crow   6
Margaret Crow 2

Address: Kirk Wynd, Dunning Perthshire

Monica!

thanks again for your help.  I have all the census and births of George and Ann, but couldn't find George on the census for 1851.  This helps alot and if I can find a birth then I might be able to confirm for sure.

I have a huge problem with this family, all the childrens middle names seem to change back and forth depending on the occasion e.g. Barbara Margaret Jane Lee is my Great Grandmother, but her marriage and death certs both have her name as Barbara Harvey Lee, family down the line named after her all use the name Harvey too ::) It's all very confusing.

Up to now I have focussed on another line, and they were all pretty straight-forward, all lived in Auchtermuchty for 300 or so years and I could almost tell what the childrens names would be just through the strong use of the Scots naming pattern.  This line and one other is proving a huge challenge!

Thanks again
