Before you start, I have to tell you tedscout has a broken wrist, so replying will be difficult. Please have patience when asking questions. Thanks.
Thomas Oldham
I hope you can help me find Thomas Oldham. He is the father of David Oldham who immigrated to Australia.
David died in Nhill, Victoria Australia on 6 September 1896.
On his death certificate
Father is listed as Thomas Oldham, Labourer
Mother’s name Unknown
Informant was his son Thomas John Oldham
Where born: Wales
How long in Australia: Perth 16 years, Victoria 20 years
David arrived in South Australia on 10 June 1856 on the ship “Golelza”
I have found him on the 1841 and 1851 British census
1841 he is living in Old Brickyard Llanelly, Carmarthenshire, Wales.
People in the household are:
John Bowen (miss transcribed on A****y as Brown), Mason 50
Mary Bowen, 35
John Ouldham, 11
Thomas Ouldham, 10
William Ouldham, 7
David Ouldham, 5
Anthony Ouldham, 4
1851 he is living in Eberneyzer Street, Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales.
People in the household are:
Mary Bowen, 40, Widow, Housekeeper
William Oldham, Son, 18, Mason
David Oldham, Son, 17, Labourer
Ay Oldham, Son, 14,
James Bowen, 9
Richard Bowen, 7
Henry Bowen, 5
Morgan Thomas, 35, Visitor, unmarried, Labourer
This census has been miss transcribed as place of birth for some of them. It is listed as Llanelly Carlow Ireland, but if you look at the original it is Llanelly, Wales.
I then went looking for Mary and John Bowen’s marriage and found it in the Free BMD. Mary Oldham married John Bowen in 2nd Quarter 1841.
I presumed from this that Thomas Oldham died somewhere between 1837 (Anthony’s birth date) and 1841 (census and 2nd marriage date), but I cannot find a death for him.
I found a marriage for a Mary David and a Thomas Oldham in the Pallot’s Marriage Index. They married in 1829 in Llanelly.
So apart from his name being on David’s death certificate and the marriage of Mary David and Thomas Oldham in the Pallot’s marriage index, I cannot find any other reference of him.
Please help me find what happened to Thomas.
Thank you in advance
Trisha
PS I am in Australia so if sometimes I don’t answer your questions straight away it is because I am sleeping.
