Queens court Biggin St Dover where was it?
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 19:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi Chatters
At long last I have managed to locate two of my grandmothers siblings baptisms. Both were baptised at St Marys Dover. The address given was 4 Queens Court Biggins St Dover. The years was 1898 and 1899. By 1901 the family had moved to St Peters St Dover.
I have looked on line at some of the Dover local history web pages which give some great photos of the shops at the turn of the century but none mentioned Queens Court. I was wondering if anyone had access to an old map they could look at and give me a rough location as to which part of Biggin St it was near.
Many thanks in advance

I don't know if this will be any help, but following the enumerator on the 1901 census,  the Oddfellows Institute, leading onto Queens Court, then onto Biggins Court.  - Not far from Worthington Street. (St Mary The Virgin District).

Hi Tressle
Thanks for the information. The oddfellows institute still exists, my father used to drink there on a Friday night. It helps with the area. I will try to get to the library at Dover to check their old maps.

Hi Panda

Hope you are keeping well - long time no see!

If my memory serves me right, Queen's Court was the area which has recently been "tarted up" and converted to flats behind the shops in Worthington Street, where the taxi office used to be, on the left going from Biggin Street to York Street.

Best wishes
Bill

Hi Bill
Yes I'm keeping well and still going strong in the family history trail, I've found a few more connections between your tree and mine all distant which means we must be related to half of Kent between us ;D ;D
Thanks for the info. I will try and get through to Dover next week and look at the old town maps.

I'm trying to find where my grandmother got baptised. She was born in 1910 St Peter st. Near St Peters and St Paul's Charlton but she along with her other siblings don't appear to have been baptised. I found the eldest two in St Marys records at the address given which is a new discovery for me. The youngest child Dorothy died the day after she was baptised at 17 days of age. Whether this had an effect on her parents I don't know. I couldn't find Dorothy's burial either. The children were brought up strict C of E. I've checked most of the parish records for Dover that are available at Canterbury and drew a blank. At least out of nine children I have found two. you would think finding people in the twentieth century would be easier than the nineteeth ??? ???

Hi Panda

Have you checked St Bart's?  It was part of Charlton parish and equi-distant from Peter Street, being on the corner of Templar Street and London Road.  I found some of mine there, and others at SS Peter & Paul.

We'll have to get together again sometime and compare notes.

Best wishes
Bill

Hi Bill
Yes I checked St Barts, I remember the church very well. I went to St Barts infant school. I tried everywhere I could. St Martind parish is the other main one. They don't have records that recent at Canterbury so I will check in the library to see what they have.
You name it I looked but drew a blank and then I found these two in St Mary's at the address above. All the other children where born at St Peters St.
The only other option is the children were baptised as a job lot when I go up in May.
Give us an email or PM and we can set a date to meet up. Thursdays are looking free in a couple of weeks.
