Merlin,
'Deed I am!   I hadn't realized that she was also absent - but on scrounging round for leads, I can't find her at all, at all!
He was a mining engineer - just re-read the ruling given by the court.  Also it says after the 1908 and at least seven years before 1934 - so that takes it back to  - WOW!   1927 - the year you found in NZ!!   Just realized!  (I'm not slow!!    ;)  )    Do you have the indexes for N.Z.?   Does it say where in NZ?  I might have to get the certificate - see if it says how long he'd been in the country.

Gardener,  the info I got was from his will - actually lack of will - list on the Wills page of Colonial Families Links Tasmania.   His wife isn't mentioned there, so am presuming someone in the family was out to try and settle some mystery  surrounding his disappearance.

You can search & order NZ BDM's here:

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

This is all the info given in the index, you would need to order the cert to gain any further info.

GAUNT  Edward  8 May 1927 #2008/7574

Can't see a death for Ethel Adair GAUNT listed in NZ up to the date available for searching.

Thanks very much Merlin - have ordered the certificate - here's hoping it tells us lots!   Living up to your name!!

funny thing - I still couldn't get the reference up until I put in the exact date you'd given me - why I wonder?

I had thought overseas - but couldn't think which way to try first!

I think the 2008 means that the death record was created in that year, for a death in 1927 - so the 2008 would be excluded from the database search which would just look for years when applying  the time qualifier for access to records. Sounds even more intriguing - what happened in 2008 for the death to be recorded, and by whom?

I wondered where the 2008 came from - how extraordinary! - and as you say, very intriguing!   Be nice to think there was another Gaunt descendant out there searching!  Be even nicer to make contact and share info!

Given that the 'no-will declaration' said 'at least seven years before 1934' - I wonder why it turns out it was exactly 7 years before.  Very odd.  Seems to me that someone knew something at some stage about someone!   Get all that?

Am now awaiting the certificate  - will all be revealed - or not!  . . .  patience is a virtue - not one of mine though!

Cheers,    Wiggy

Rported as being thrown out of a buggy in 1901 and breaking his wrist. the NLA site has lotsto look at Wiggy but knowing you you have most likely found it all in your search.

Hi Robyn,

Yes seen all those - and half the family is in that Launceston album!  great source of info!  the paper reference is to his father Edward!   He was a mining legal man.  I have scoured the papers  and can't find anything specifically about Edward Cecil. And with Dad having the same name and being in a similar line, things get confusing!   Plenty of references to Edward - both in hot water and out of it!!  all referring to Dad I believe - his I mean!!   ;)

Thanks for looking!

Hi Merlin,

Well this is an odd one - I've just received in the post, the death certificate  of Edward Gaunt 2008/7574 as you told me - and he died in 2008!!!   He was 80 -  much too young for the guy I want -  born in England on 8th May 1927 - so that is where that date come it!  Good try though!!

Off we go again!

Cheers,            Wiggy     ;)
