What Regiment?
« on: Wednesday 03 March 10 20:22 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know what regiment this uniform might be to do with.  I know it's a long shot but any help would be gratefully received.

Its very difficult without cap badge but id have a guess at Royal Field Artillery..Definately a mounted soldier..there looks to be  a shoulder title but would require a good scan may be a territorial soldier also.

Chloe,

There is a Charles Frederick Palmer on CWGC, is it likely to be him?

Hello Forester,

That's my  Charles Frederick Palmer, sadly his war records were burnt, but someone has been in contact with me and have sent me that photo saying it is him, my grandfather, but thought he looked rather young in it for it to be him, so wondered if I could find any information on his uniform.

From what I can see...This is quite a late pic of him....Late 1917, so most likely just before he was KIA

Agreed that it is definitely a mounted soldier; however I have a photo of my late father taken around the same time, when I find it I will post it, but the consensus of opinion is that he looked considerably older than his 18 years. He put his age up 3 years to join, and by the time the photo was taken had served 2 years in the trenches as a signaller. I wonder whether infantry soldiers who survived had a greater toll on their health than those who were in mounted units?

If that is a photo of my grandfather and the photo was taken in 1917, he would have been 29 years of age.  I don't think that soldier looks that old, do you?
