"Alfred Roberts" is my grandfather. He married my granny in 1904, had at least three children, then left her and according to family rumour returned to Cork.
From the marriage certificate he was born c1870 and his father was Charles Roberts, a shutter maker. He married in Worcestershire, then worked in Herefordshire, before settling (for a while) in Newport, South Wales.
By this time he and the rest of family were using another surname (his wife's previous name) and the name 'Roberts' was never used in Newport (to this day!).
The only census that he appears on is the 1911 in Newport (with his assumed name) and this gives his place of birth as 'Ireland'.
He had several jobs but in Newport was a 'bridge painter' and 'ship painter' and I believe he started his own painting firm.
I would be grateful for any information about what happened to Alfred after about 1912.
