kettering soldier in 1830

Where would I find info?

Thomas Rollins (Rawlings) married in 1854 and his father is listed as soldier as I have lost him between 1831 and here wondered how traced soldiers movements.
Esp in 1841 census.

There is lots of military information held in the National Archives at Kew but if you don't know the regiment you could be searching for ages.   I have used the following:

- Pay and Muster Rolls in WO 12.   
- Discharge Papers (assuming he didn't die in service) in WO 97.
- Pension details if he served long enough to qualify in WO 22 & WO 23.

Lots of regiments would have been posted abroad or in Ireland, which would have counted as a home posting, so that may be why he doesn't show up in the census.

I don't know where to start so this big help.

It doesn't mention he deceased on sons marriage cert (2854) so presume he still alive but as this hobby shows you can never be 100%
 
Would there be any way of viewing records without travelling to Kew (not an option at the moment).
 And any costs involved.

Each regiment kept it's own records, so if you don't know the regiment it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.   Just because your man lived in Northants doesn't mean he would have joined the Northamptonshire regiment but that is probably the best place to start.

I'm unlikely to get to Kew this side of Easter as I have a busy couple of weeks coming up and then I'll be away on holiday.   If you can wait that long then I would be happy to look at the Northamptonshire records for you on my next visit.

Just let me know your man's full name and (if you know them) his place of birth and approximate year of birth and I will see what I can come up with.

To be honest it wouldn't be fair to ask you for help at the moment as all I know is what I typed before (very little).

I am due to scour some census records so if they turn something up (fingers crossed) then will get back to you.
To be honest i was just assuming he would be posted in Northants regiment so your info made me think and realise it wasn't a way to find further info about him.

Still here, after alot of trying to remember log in details
I do have rollins in Kettering and even found some with g link as 2 brothers each had different spelling of same surname.
Who are you Rollin(g)s ?

I havent actually done any family history in awhile so this has got me looking at my notes again

The earliest Rollins I have, is Thomas (1829 Kett to 1883 Wellingborough). He married An Collins. The line then goes forward to my gt-aunt Doris Rollins, who married Frank Stanley Higgs. Their daughter, Rona is still with us.

My nan and pap was Hilda May and Stanley Herbert. Hildas sister was Doris.
You will know these names too then:
Violet, Big Bill, Ginger Bill and sadly Elsie May who died young.
