Not Serving in WWII
« on: Monday 08 March 10 21:14 GMT (UK) »
I am curious about this one. My father served with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment prior to WWII. At the age of 27 he married my mother in 1940.
I have no indications that he had any injury or ill health exactly the opposite.
Can anyone speculate on to why an able bodied 25 year old at the outbreak of war with past military service did not get called up. Instead he was in  the Home Guard.
It just does not make sense to me.

Hi Bob,
Other than having ill health  he may have been in a reserved occupation which may have prevented him from serving.

I never thought of that. That puts some things together. Dad was a Grimsby boy and I often wondered how he ended up in Hinckley, Leics. Mother I know worked in munitions prior to having me (1942). So would it make sense that dad was sent to Hinckley to work there and there he met my mother and married.
I have to get his army record but he must have been discharged before hostilities broke out. In that case would someone have sent him to a job away from home town?
Us kids was told very little.
