royal artillery- boer war 1st & 2nd

Is there anyway that i can find out if john parton in the 1st boer war i cannot find him in 1881 which makes me think he was. in 1891 he was a gunman in  the royal artillery living at the barracks in woolwich with his second wife martha jane.

On marriage cert in 1888 he is at barracks
Martha is living at 30 artillery place
