Thomas Davidson in Aspatria
« on: Wednesday 10 March 10 09:57 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth of Thomas Davidson who was born in Aspatria between 1849 and 1853 (birthdate discrepancy on census after marriage).  On his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as John Davidson.  thomas married Ellen Corns after moving to Much Woolton near Liverpool.  He gave his birthplace on some census as Carlisle, but on the 1911 census it is given as Aspatria.

Hope someone can help.

Hi,

I did a search on Freebmd and Aspatria comes under Wigton. If you do a search for the years you said, there is 1 Thomas Davidson in 1850 and a Thomas Clark Davidson in 1852.

Does the marriage certificate give his father's occupation? There is a John Davidson in the Cleator area in 1861 with a son Thomas, aged 12, born Dean, Cumberland. John is a joiner.

I can give full details if you think this might be yours.

Alternatively, there are children of a James and Ann DAVIDSON (including Thomas 1845) bap at Aspatria.  1851 census shows that James was a Stone Mason.

John is listed as a labourer on the marriage certificate.  Thomas's age is just given as 'full age' so I can't get a definite date.  In the 1901 census Thomas gives his date of birth as 1853, can't find him in the 1881 census, but he married in that year so he had probably moved to Lancashire.  I found a Thomas Davidson in the 1871 census, born in Aspatria and working in Ullock as a servant.  I have also found the 1861 census entry you found for Dean son of John & Mary and also the other one son of James & Jane, but I can't read the place of birth, looks like Ainstable!  This seems the most likely as Thomas was a farm labourer all his life.  It is interesting that both Thomas & ellen corns' father have been put down as labourers on the marriage certificate, I know that ellen's father was a farm labourer.

Many thanks and I look forward to your replies.
 :)

The ainstable Thomas is not the one as I have found him in the census married to someone else and still living in Cumberland.  In 1881 I have found my Thomas living as a boarder in Tarbock, Lancs, which is where Ellen Corns lived.  As this is just weeks before the wedding, it must be the right one.  Sadly, he gives his birthplace as Carlisle. :)

I found a Thomas Davidson in the 1871 census, born in Aspatria and working in Ullock as a servant.

I was hoping that the presence there of a John DAVIDSON 16 would be helpful, but it doesn't seem to be :(
