Hi Savannah :)

Welcome to rootschat.

Thank you for the information about your great-grandfather.

The marriage registration for John Charles SEWELL's marriage to Betty COLLINS was after 1944 as his first wife Gladys Amy died in 1944.  The marriage index in Victoria only extends to 1942.

Birth
SEWELL John Charles
Father Sydney George  Mother Florence Amelia PHILBIN
At Essendon  1914  Reg#3260

Marriage
SEWELL John Charles
WEEDON Gladys Amy
1934  Reg#12027

Gladys Amy died in 1944 and her last address shown on the cemetery record is 21 Salisbury Street, Moonee Ponds.  She is buried next to to Sidney John SEWELL, John Charles' father.

and then on the Victorian electoral roll in 1949

SEWELL John Charles, 21 Salisbury Avenue, North Essendon  Motor driver
SEWELL Betty  21 Salisbury Avenue, North Essendon  HD

Betty was at the same address on the 1954 electoral roll.

The news item about the accident states that John Charles SEWELL was an engineer.

John's death certificate should detail both his marriages and the children from both marriages. You can purchase online [$17.50] and immediately download an image of certificates in Victoria.

So it would appear there were two 'real' wives ;D

Savannah births are not available after 1910 online but a number of rootschatters have resources to 1920.

As I mentioned previously, John Charles SEWELL's death certificate would name children of both marriages ie if the informant had the knowledge.

Were you aware of John's first marriage?

No-one actually knows Gladys's birth date, Because her only daughter was 3 when she passed away. Her full name was Gladys Amy Weeden, and I know both children but only one of there last names theres:

Patricia Dianne Hall

Savannah we found her birth under the name of SCHROEDER...and it is all on the thread but I will copy it here.  I would suggest that Gladys's father changed his name because of the anti German feelings in Aus during WW1.

Gladys's death registration and she is buried next to John Charles' father at Keilor cemetery.

SEWELL Gladys Amy
Father Werdon Alexander  Mother May UNKNOWN
East Brunswick  27 years  1944  Reg#849

Can't find a birth for a Gladys Amy WEEDON but there is this one...bear with me on this  :) Only Gladys Amy with parents Alex and May in period.

SCHROEDER Gladys Amy
Father Alex  Mother May MILLSEN
At Carlton 1916  Reg#18913

So thought perhaps Gladys Amy WEEDON had been married previously but nothing on the indexes....found the above parents'  marriage

Marriage
SCHROEDER Alex
NILLSON May Lillian
At Brunswick  1905  Reg#8411

and deaths...nothing under SCHROEDER ...however...is this May Lilian NILLSON who married Alex SCHROEDER and changed their surname?

Death
WEEDON May Lilian
Father Nelson Harris  Mother May Lilian  SMITH
At Springvale  55 years  1937  Reg#15018

WEEDON  Arthur Alexander
Father Unknown  Mother UNKNOWN
At Heidelberg  87 years  1971  Reg#8114

Death at Heidelberg could be at the Repatriation Hospital so looked for a war record -

WW1 Service Record for Arthur WEEDON who enlisted in 1917 with NOK Wife May - did he change his name from SCHROEDER to WEEDON because of the war.  Record states he is married with several children.

Springvale Botanical Cemetery - May is buried and Arthur was cremated and his ashes scattered.

Births to this couple

SCHROEDER Alex Arthur Edward
Father Alex  Mother May Lillian NILLSON
At Carlton  1907  Reg#8974
and his death
WEEDON  Arthur Edward
Father Alexander  Mother May  UNKNOWN

her marriage
WEEDON Edna Elizth Rachel

SCHROEDER Violet Mary

Did SCHROEDER family changed their name to WEEDON c1917?  I would say yes.

Cheers

Gladys's marriage certificate would have the full name of her mother ie her surname which would help you prove she was the daughter of Lillian May NILLSON/NELSON/NILLSEN

Perhaps read the complete thread :)
