Crimean War medal lookup request - Skuse
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 11:20 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to piece together the military career, if any, of Maurice Skuse b. circa 1818 at Mangotsfield, Bristol.  Family legend has it that he served in the Crimea - he obviously survived as he went on to marry a lady 40 years his junior and father 9 children.

The surname may be spelled Skuse or Skuce or even Scuse and his first name as Maurice or Morris.

If there is a matching person on the medal roll I would be very grateful for that information.

The problem is -  without a regiment - you are asking someone to go through nearly 7,000 pages of the roll. Not to mention the problem with his name.  If you google/bing 'crimea medal roll cd' you can find out how to buy it and do the look up yourself. Or wait until next year when Findmypast will put surviving pre 1914 army records online and you will be able to do a name search.

Many thanks for this information. I had assumed that the medal rolls had been digitised on CD or somesuch.   Useful to know that findmypast will have these digitised in the future as I have a full subscription there.

Are you aware that the broadcaster Keith Skues has spent many years researching this surname in every possible form?  He has a huge archive of records.  Might be worth contacting him:

Again thanks.  I am familiar with Keith's work and have his  book and much data intended for the next edition on disk. Regrettably Keith has not got around to the Crimea medal rolls yet.
