Minnie Duggan/Crosby Census
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 00:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello :)

I was wondering if someone would be able to check the the 1900 and 1910 census for New York for me please? :)

In 1900 I'm looking for either Minnie A. Duggan or she may be Minnie A. Crosby at this stage. In 1910 she is definitely Minnie A. Crosby. I have found her on the 1920 and 1930 census' already.

I'm also wondering does anyone know where I would find her naturalization records? On the 1920 census it's stated that immigrated from Ireland in 1892(? - it's not very clear) and was naturalized in 1897(?).

However, on the 1930 census she claims that she immigrated in 1895.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm not familiar with U.S. searches :)

Thanks,
Alison

I don't think that would be her, even though the age seems fairly accurate. Her maiden name was Duggan and I'm pretty sure she was married by 1910 as her daughter Marion Crosby was apparently born in circa 1904.

I'm not sure exactly what age she will be, the ages don't tally on the 1920 and 1930 census but I've been told this is not that unusual. In 1900 I'm expecting her to be roughly  30 and in 1910 roughly 40

Really appreciate the effort though! :)

Ohh Tony yes! :D

I knew she was a widow by 1920 at least and with Marion's age that's perfect! I knew one child, Bessie had died aged 5 but there was obviously another child then too.

Thank you! :D Any ideas about 1900? :D

Hmmm, the only Minnie i can find in 1900 gives her birth as June 1861 in Ireland living with husband Patrick Crosby
born August 1852.
Patrick immigrated in 1870 and Minnie in 1885, no children born at this time. if this is the correct Minnie she knocked a few years off in the later census

living in Manhattan,New York.

added, Patrick is listed as Policeman....

Hmmm....the age is not impossible though.....her younger sister was born in 1859 so maybe it is right....but then she would have been at least in her 40's having the kids, depending on when the first child was born....

She was a hell of a liar in later years with her age then! :p

My Gran says as far as she knows Minnie and her husband had a fair bit of money, which is how they managed to support a lot of nieces and nephews who came over to New York. Any ideas if their addresses for each of the census' would give some sort of idea of their social standing?

At least the name Patrick gives me something to start looking for...I can't find any birth/baptism records for Minnie because Minnie is a nickname but I don't know what for. The most common names seem to be Mary and Catherine but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thank you again :D

Actually if Patrick was a policeman...I presume that would be NYPD? Do you know if they have records that can be accessed by the public? He must have died somewhere between 1904 (Marion's birth) and 1910 (next census).

There's a birth for Mariann Crosby 24 July 1903 Manhattan here-
www.italiangen.org/NYCBirthsearch.asp

Can't see Minnie's marriage under 'm' for 1st name (Minnie is usually a nickname for Mary) but perhaps marriage didn't take place in N.Y.C. or it's under a different name- only 1 Patrick Crosby marriage (1909- bride is Ellen Murphy).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
