I am looking into the UK family history of Stephen Roberts ( lived circa 1810- 1900). I am trying to confirm where he was born as well as go back in his Roberts family history. Currently I have a conflict within the information I have acquired on his life in the US.
His second marriage in New York gives the birth place as Jersey, Channel Islands
The 1880 census with this wife gives the birth place as Wales and his parents as born in Wales
The 1860 census with his first wife gives his birth as being England. Other information suggests Cornwall or Devon.
In the writings of Stephen's niece Grace Roberts Moore of California she talks of her father Martin (Stephen's brother) taking her to relatives in Plymouth and his early boyhood home in Jersey and her grandfather John being of Welsh extraction and a sea farer.
Stephen Roberts emigrated to the United States as child living in New York City and Ohio. He was a boatbuilder, shipsmith, champion rower and an alderman in New York.
I'll post this also on the Wales, Devon and Channel Islands boards and would appreciate any help on Stephen and his family's connection with the sea.
