Local Newspapers
« on: Sunday 21 March 10 14:00 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone could ell me if there are copies of old local papers. My Great Grandmothers father, James Arkell died just before she was born in 1892 (June) and I was wondering if this is something that would have been mentioned in a local paper if there was one. He was only 25 and until I can get a copy of a death certificate I don't know what he died of. Any help/advice would really be appreciated.

It would help to know where he died.  :)

Hi Stan,

From my Great Grandmothers birth certificate we can tell she was born in Alnwick in July 1892. Her Father is showing as James Arkle (deceased) I found an index (but forgot to take it down!) for a death of James Arkle in April,May,June of 1892 aged 25 - we think there may have been something very sad about it as he had only been married about 4 years,
Kind regards
Vik

The Federation of Family History Societies publish a small book which details all the Local Papers and the years they were published.
It is available from GenFair is for the years 1750-1920 and costs £4>95 + P&P.

If you are living in/close to Northumberland you should be able to get some help at the County Records office.

On my first visit to Worcester Family History Centre I had a query about an 1839 death. The helpful staff there helped me to pin down the newspaper it was most likely to appear in. As I had a death date I was able to check the newspaper from this date. He was found quite easily as his death was reported in the issue published the following week.

A death certificate would be worth getting, otherwise you could be ploughing through several months of newspapers to find what you want.

Good luck
Angela

The Lancashire Libraries website gives access to lots of 19th C. newspapers including those from Newcastle.
You have to join the library on-line for free, they send you a card with an access number and off you go!
Good Luck!

I'm not sure whether Alnwick had it's own newspaper - I've not found a reference to one yet.

Otherwise either the Berwick Advertiser which has been going for 200 years or possibly the Morpeth Herald could be the answer.

Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn may have them or the local library
