Hanlon or O'Hanlon
« on: Monday 22 March 10 01:42 GMT (UK) »
???  I am looking for County Cork records for my Great-Grandfather Daniel Hanlon (also shown as O'Hanlon in death/burial records).  He was born about 1835 in County Cork, but as yet I do not have a parish or location.  Daniel emigrated, probably to the Australian goldfields in Victoria before 1860, then went goldmining in Central Otago in New Zealand.  He farmed at Moonlight near Middlemarch, Central Otago for 28 years, after marrying Margaret O'Halloran from County Clare in 1872.  They retired to Dunedin in 1907, and Daniel died there in 1916.
There is a passenger record of a Daniel Hanlon aged 26 and his brother Patrick aged 30, arriving in New South Wales on the ship Glen Isla in 1857 - age and date is a match, but may not be him.  I will continue to search for information on a locality in County Cork, but interested in any information.
Hanlon, O'Hanlon (Cork), O'Halloran (Clare), Nolan (Kerry), Costello (Kerry), McKenzie (Perth), Thin (Melrose), Crankshaw (Lancashire), Forbes (Berwickshire), South (Hampshire), and more.

Since Daniel's birth is before civil registration started in 1864, you will need to research church records to progress your search. To do this you will need to establish the families religion and the location they lived. see : 2 Minute Introduction to Irish Records

Cork is the largest county in Ireland and has a large number of parishes (see Cork RC Parish Maps) and O'Hanlon is a quite common surname .. so you will require other clues to connect to the right family. (e.g. father's name)

Some County Cork records are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History foundation - but they only include records for part of the county (north east). I believe addition records, possibly for the city and west of the county, are planned to be added to http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/

 :(  Thanks for that, Shane.
That is what I figured.  I hope to speak to some relatives shortly, to see if I can find father's name or exact location, but no guarantees.
From what I have seen in searching Kerry Catholic parish registers, there are a lot of gaps in the records (got lucky there, not likely to happen again!).
I posted on the slight chance that somebody may be working on the same families.  Thansk for your response.   John.

:D With help from my cousins and targetted searching, I have confirmed that my Great-great-grandfather Daniel O'Hanlon/Hanlon came from near Kanturk, probably in the Clonfert Parish, Duhallow Barony, County Cork, Ireland.
He was born about 1835, and parents were Cornelius O'Hanlon and Margaret Murphy.  There is a newspaper extract reference to a Cornelius O'Hanlon death about 17 January 1898.

Daniel's wife was Margaret O'Halloran, and she came from Ballyhannon, near Quin, County Clare, Ireland.
Margaret was born about 1844, and parents were Michael O'Halloran from Ballyhannon, and Mary Meany from Knockanoura, County Clare.
This is probably as much information that I can hope for from Ireland, until Cork and Clare parish records are processed and available online.
Thanks to those that offered suggestions.  The information may help other family members.

Hi John,

I'm researching the New Zealand gold rushes as part of my doctoral dissertation and am currently tracking down letters, diaries, and memoirs from miners held in private hands.  Do you have any firsthand accounts by your ancestor, which you'd be willing to let me take a look at?  In exchange, I'd be more than happy to send your way any info I might find about him.  I have copies of around 10,000 mining rights, as well as several administrative sources that list miners, including business and mining institute ledgers, as well as library lending records and the like.  I can be reached at (*)

All the best,
Dan
