The only possible birth I can find for this is;
Ellen HAMNETT, June 1847, Chorlton, 20 285
Although in Lancs it is the only one unless Hammett is very badly mistranscribed

This is the only 1841 Census  can find with a John in Cornwall;
1841 Census
Madron, Cornwall
HO107/143/1/Madron

James HAMMITT, 60, Clerk
Ann, 55
James, 29, Shoe maker
Richard, 27, Shoe maker
Philip, 25, Taylor
Grace, 23
JOHN, 19
William, 17, Labourer
Jane ROWE, 3mths
Jane HOSKING, 82
Unfortunately no occp for John. All born in County

There are several born Devon on the 1841 census
If you check FreeBMD using soundex there are only a couple of possible marriages for a John Hammett 1844-1848.

Where in the World did they settle?
If Australia have you got the Death Cert of John or Marriage Cert of the child?

Trish :)

I see they arrived in Sth Australia July 1849. Name on list HAMMILL corrected to HAMMETT.
There is a birth of a Ellen HAMMILL, March 1848, Penzance, 9 232

Any info on death cert?

Have you tried;
www.cornwall-opc.org

EDIT;
Possible Marriage from Cornwall OPC
John HAMMILL/Anne THORNTON,  12 July 1846, Penzance
There is lots of info and matches with 1841 Census I found . Occp of John is not farm lab but maybe thats what was needed and he changed occp to get a assisted passage to Australia.
I also cannot find him in 1851 Census so looks good.

FreeBMD has this marriage reg;
Anne THORNTON, September 1846, Penzance, 9 233
On the same page is John HAMMILL
Penzance is the reg district for Madron, Cornwall.

There is a birth of a Ellen Thornton HAMMILL, 1848 on Cornwall OPC

Trish :)

EDIT;
James Hammill married Ann Hoskin 1810. So looks like that is her Mother with them in 1841 Census.

Ann is still alive in 1851 Census, born c 1785 Madron. Daughter Grace is married, Philip is still at home.

Hi.  Maybe I can help.  A local here in Maryland did an entire book from the first Hammett that came here.  My ancestors are from Devon/Cornwall
